Director of Impact

Position can be in Kampala, Uganda or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position Summary:  

The Director of Impact is accountable for delivery, quality, and measurable results for Technical Assistance projects, and using the monitoring, evaluation, and learning information to determine whether the intervention is working. The Director builds the systems, standards, and evidence base to grow additional Technical Assistance projects. This role leads the  Technical Assistance Country Program Managers. The Director also ensures that results are documented well building the knowledge base, sector credibility, and donor-ready communication that Water for Good needs to grow Technical Assistance as well as the Vision of a Healthy Village. 

Responsibilities & Duties Overview:  

Resolve cross-country issues and make the trade-off calls that country leads cannot make alone. 

Delivery & Performance Management of Technical Assistance Projects  

Leadership of all Technical Assistance programs, including overall delivery against the grant agreement.   Establish delivery standards, stage gates, and review cadences that apply across the TA portfolio. Run regular portfolio reviews covering progress, risk, budget, and partner satisfaction.  Build and hold relationships with the implementing partner organizations, national government agencies, and WASH networks. Maintain a consolidated risk register and drive mitigation to closure.  Build the tools, templates, and playbooks that make each new TA engagement faster to launch than the last.  Represent the TA portfolio in global program and leadership forums. 

Data, Knowledge Management, KPI Monitoring & Reporting  

Deliver accurate, on-time reporting to donors, the Senior Leadership Team, and the Board as required by maintaining dashboards and reporting 

Quality Assurance, Innovation, Sustainability & Organizational Learning  

Responsible for data and knowledge management, KPI monitoring and reporting  Set and enforce technical quality standards for TA delivery, Establish quality assurance processes covering design review, field verification, and corrective action follow-through.  Lead structured learning reviews and feed findings into Water for Good's global practice and strategic planning.  Technical Assistance, Capacity Strengthening & Business Development   Identify and pursue new TA opportunities, and lead or contribute to proposals, concept notes, and pricing.  Build internal capability so Water for Good staff can deliver TA at consistent quality as the portfolio grows. 

Team Leadership & People Development  

Lead, coach, and develop direct reports with regular one-on-ones and clear expectations.  Manage performance through Water for Good's goal setting, quarterly assessment, and review processes.  Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and structure of the TA team as the portfolio grows, in coordination with the manager and Human Resources.  Invest in local leadership depth, so capability sits close to the work rather than at headquarters.  Build a team culture reflecting Water for Good's core values of love, curiosity, collaboration, sustainability, and stewardship.  Address performance and conduct concerns directly, fairly, and promptly, with HR support. 

Other Duties and Organizational Support  

Contribute to strategic planning, policy development, and organizational initiatives.  Support cross-country assignments and special projects as assigned.  Other tasks as assigned. 

Work Experience & Qualifications:  

Required Qualifications: 

Passion for Water for Good's mission of transforming lives through sustainable access to safe water, as well as improved sanitation and hygiene, in places that need it most  10 years' progressively responsible experience in international development, including senior responsibility for multi-country or multi-project portfolios.  Demonstrated experience leading WASH programming, technical assistance, or advisory services to partner organizations and government agencies.  Proven accountability for restricted grant delivery, including budget management, donor compliance, and audit.  Strong monitoring and evaluation background: results frameworks, indicator design, evaluation methods, data quality systems, and translating findings into decisions.  Track record managing and developing senior staff, including staff based in other countries.  Experience negotiating and managing partnerships, service contracts, and donor relationships.  Evidence of building systems, standards, or practices that outlasted a single project.  Excellent written and oral communication in English, including reporting to donors and senior leadership.  Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions with incomplete information in complex operating contexts.  Bachelor's degree in water or civil engineering, public health, environmental health, development studies, economics, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.  Professional working proficiency in English.  Willingness to travel regularly across Uganda, Cameroon, and other program countries.  Must have the legal right to work in the selected duty station  

Preferred Qualifications: 

Professional working proficiency in French.  Experience establishing programs or operations in a country new to the organization.  Familiarity with professionalized rural water operation and maintenance models and fee-for-service approaches.  Experience with results-based or performance-based funding arrangements.  Business development experience: proposals, concept notes, pricing, and consultancy revenue.  Experience with digital monitoring platforms, including mWater, and dashboard development.  Familiarity with Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and household or village certification approaches.  Prior experience based in or working extensively across Sub-Saharan Africa.  Participation in WASH sector networks or communities of practice. 

Physical Qualifications: 

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.  Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times  Ability to travel to and move around rural field sites, including uneven terrain and limited-infrastructure settings.  Travel Required: Approximately 20–30% travel, including domestic field travel and occasional international travel.
