Underground Operations Director (gold)

The Company

Globe 24-7, in partnership with a leading mining company, is seeking a an experienced Director, Underground Operations to provide senior operational leadership across its underground mining portfolio. The role will be responsible for driving safe, efficient and sustainable underground mining operations, while providing strategic direction and operational oversight across sites.

The Role

The successful candidate will bring a strong track record in underground mining , ideally gained within the gold mining sector , with experience operating at Group, regional or multi-site level. The individual should have the credibility to engage with General Managers, Underground Managers, technical teams and senior executives, while maintaining a strong focus on operational performance, safety, productivity and cost management.

The Responsibilities

Strategic & Operational Leadership

Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for underground mining operations across the Group/region. Develop and implement underground mining strategies aligned with business objectives. Drive consistent operational standards, performance expectations and best practices across sites. Provide leadership, guidance and support to General Managers, Underground Managers and operational leadership teams. Monitor operational performance and ensure delivery against production, development, cost and efficiency targets. Identify operational risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.

Underground Mining Performance

Lead initiatives to improve underground mine productivity, utilisation, development rates and production performance. Review and optimise underground mining methods, mine designs, production systems and operating practices. Drive continuous improvement across mining operations, with a strong focus on operational discipline and cost effectiveness. Support the implementation of appropriate mechanisation, technology and mining systems where applicable. Ensure mine plans and operational strategies are aligned with available resources, infrastructure and production requirements.

Safety & Risk Management

Maintain a strong focus on health, safety and environmental performance across underground operations. Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure appropriate standards, systems and controls are implemented. Provide senior leadership on critical operational risks associated with underground mining. Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, company standards and industry best practice.

People & Leadership

Build high-performing operational leadership teams across the underground portfolio. Develop and mentor senior mining personnel and succession pipelines. Promote accountability, collaboration and operational excellence. Work closely with HR and site leadership to strengthen organisational capability and workforce effectiveness.

Stakeholder & Executive Management

Partner with the executive leadership team on operational strategy, capital planning and business performance. Provide regular reporting and recommendations to senior management and/or the Board. Work collaboratively with technical, geological, engineering, finance and sustainability functions. Engage effectively with regulators, government stakeholders and other relevant external parties when required.

The Requirements

Degree or equivalent qualification in Mining Engineering or a related mining discipline. Significant senior-level experience within the mining industry, with extensive exposure to underground mining operations. Proven experience leading underground mining operations at GM, Underground Manager, Operations Director, Head of Underground Operations or equivalent level. Strong operational experience across one or more underground mining methods and environments. Demonstrated responsibility for significant underground production operations, ideally across multiple sites. Experience in gold mining is strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience in operational improvement, productivity enhancement and cost management. Strong understanding of underground mine planning, production, development, infrastructure and operational risk. Experience working in Africa and/or complex emerging-market mining environments would be highly advantageous. Experience managing and influencing senior operational teams across multiple locations.
