We are conducting a search for an experienced Controller to join a growing construction related organization in Queens, New York. This is a hands-on accounting leadership role for someone who understands that strong financial reporting starts with strong processes, accurate data, and clear ownership.

The ideal candidate combines strong construction accounting experience with practical general ledger, cost accounting, inventory, and financial reporting knowledge. This person will work closely with leadership and the accounting team to strengthen processes, resolve discrepancies, improve controls, and ensure timely and accurate financial information.

Essential Functions

Financial Reporting and General Ledger

Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year end close processes and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.

Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and adjusting entries.

Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules for leadership.

Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and ensure issues are followed through to resolution.

Support annual audits, tax reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and other financial initiatives as required.

Construction, Cost, and Inventory Accounting

Oversee construction accounting activities, including job costing, labor and project allocations, and related financial reporting.

Develop and review inventory analysis reports and investigate cost and inventory variances.

Monitor inventory transactions, verify accurate costs, and reconcile inventory accounts to the general ledger.

Partner with operations and project teams to improve the accuracy and flow of job, cost, and inventory information.

Identify process gaps that affect financial accuracy and implement practical controls and procedures.

Accounting Operations and Controls

Provide oversight and support across accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, billing, and related accounting functions.

Establish and maintain systems, controls, and documented processes that support the integrity of financial data.

Clarify ownership and accountability within accounting workflows and strengthen communication across departments.

Review existing processes and recommend improvements that increase accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.

Participate in special projects and prepare financial analyses or reports as requested by leadership.

Team Leadership and Partnership

Support and develop accounting team members while establishing clear expectations and accountability.

Work collaboratively with accounting, operations, project management, Human Resources, and leadership.

Communicate financial and process issues clearly to both accounting and nonaccounting stakeholders.

Promote a team oriented environment focused on problem solving, follow through, and continuous improvement.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may provide direct supervision and day to day leadership to members of the accounting team.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment. The role requires frequent collaboration with accounting, operations, and leadership teams.

Physical Demands

This is largely a sedentary office role requiring prolonged periods at a desk and computer.

Position Type

This is a full time, exempt position. This role is in person at the Queens, New York office.

Travel

Limited local travel may be required based on business needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including hands on construction accounting experience.

Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.

Experience with construction job costing, cost accounting, and inventory accounting.

Strong Microsoft Excel skills and comfort working with detailed financial data.

Excellent organization, communication, and problem solving skills.

Process driven approach with strong follow through, attention to detail, and accountability.

Ability to work collaboratively across departments and contribute as a hands on team player.

Preferred Qualifications

CPA certification preferred.

Acumatica experience, particularly General Ledger functionality, is a plus.

Experience improving accounting controls, workflows, and documented procedures.

Experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff.
