About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and technically competent Technical Superintendent to oversee the technical management, maintenance, operational reliability and regulatory compliance of an assigned fleet of approximately five tankers.

The successful candidate will serve as the company's technical representative in Nigeria, working alongside an overseas-based Technical Superintendent while exercising independent technical judgement and decision-making authority on local vessel operations, repairs, maintenance and emergencies.

The role requires a seasoned marine engineering professional with recent seagoing experience as a Chief Engineer on chemical or product tankers, strong knowledge of two-stroke marine propulsion systems, and practical experience with vessel maintenance, repairs, dry-docking and international tanker inspection standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Fleet Management

Oversee the technical management and operational condition of assigned vessels.

Monitor planned maintenance systems, machinery performance, vessel defects and outstanding repairs.

Ensure timely resolution of technical issues to maintain vessel reliability and operational readiness.

Provide technical guidance and support to onboard Chief Engineers.

2. Vessel Attendance and Emergency Response

Attend vessels at Nigerian ports, terminals and anchorages to supervise repairs, investigate breakdowns and resolve technical emergencies.

Make independent technical decisions and coordinate corrective actions.

Monitor repair progress and ensure work is completed to the required technical standards.

3. Repairs, Dry-Docking and Shipyard Management

Prepare technical repair specifications and dry-docking scopes of work.

Evaluate shipyard proposals, contractor quotations and vendor submissions.

Supervise repair and dry-docking activities, ensuring quality, cost and schedule compliance.

Verify completed work against approved specifications and agreed quotations.

4. Regulatory Compliance and Vessel Inspections

Ensure assigned vessels maintain readiness for SIRE/CDI inspections, Port State Control inspections, flag state surveys and classification society surveys.

Coordinate inspection preparations and follow up on technical deficiencies.

Liaise with NIMASA, classification societies, surveyors and other maritime regulatory stakeholders.

5. Procurement and Cost Control

Review technical requisitions and coordinate the sourcing of marine spares, equipment and services.

Assess vendor quotations and ensure procurement decisions are commercially reasonable.

Verify vendor invoices against approved work scopes, delivered materials and actual work performed.

Monitor technical expenditure and contribute to vessel budgets and cost-control initiatives.

6. Reporting and Stakeholder Management

Provide timely and accurate technical reports to the overseas Technical Superintendent and management.

Report candidly on vessel condition, technical risks, repair requirements and expenditure.

Maintain effective working relationships with local shipyards, marine vendors, class surveyors and regulatory authorities.

Ensure clear documentation of technical decisions, repairs and maintenance activities.

Essential Requirements

Candidates must meet all the following requirements to be considered:

Possession of a Class 1 Motor or Combined Certificate of Competency (CoC) from a recognised issuing authority, with a valid NIMASA endorsement. Steam-only certificates will not be accepted.

Recent service as a Chief Engineer on chemical or product tankers within the last five years.

Practical experience operating and maintaining two-stroke main engines, preferably MAN B&W or equivalent.

Previous sailing experience with an established tanker management company.

Demonstrable experience with SIRE/CDI vetting, planned maintenance systems and dry-docking preparation.

Based in Lagos or willing to relocate to Lagos.

Willingness to remain in a shore-based technical management position rather than seeking a return to sea.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

1–2 years of shore-based experience as an Assistant Technical Superintendent or Technical Superintendent.

Experience preparing technical budgets, repair specifications and dry-docking scopes.

Exposure to shipyard supervision, marine procurement and vendor management.

Working knowledge of Nigerian shipyards, NIMASA procedures, classification societies and local marine vendors.

Experience reporting to or collaborating with an overseas-based technical management team.

Key Competencies

Strong marine engineering knowledge and technical troubleshooting capabilities.

Independent judgement and sound decision-making.

Excellent vessel maintenance and repair management skills.

High integrity in procurement, vendor selection and cost verification.

Strong written reporting and communication skills.

Ability to manage emergencies and competing technical priorities.

Professional confidence to communicate technical findings and recommendations transparently.

Compensation

₦8,000,000 – ₦10,000,000 monthly, negotiable, depending on qualifications and relevant experience.

Application

Interested and qualified candidates should submit their updated CV, clearly stating their marine engineering qualifications, Certificate of Competency, NIMASA endorsement, tanker experience, vessel engine types and shore-based technical management experience.
