Technical Operations Manager, Commercial
About Omnidian Omnidian, Inc. is a fast-growing Series C tech-enabled service company revolutionizing performance assurance for the distributed solar and energy storage industries. Omnidian is building a more sustainable future for the planet through our passionate teams, our innovative technology, and by creating an amazing customer experience. We are a certified B Corps, headquartered in Seattle, WA
The Job As a Commercial Technical Operations Manager, you'll be the technical lead for a distributed portfolio of solar PV and energy storage assets. You'll be the main technical contact for your assigned clients and will work daily with Portfolio Managers and the Commercial Operations Team. You'll take assets from onboarding through performance management and reporting, and you'll support the service and QA/QC work that keeps them producing, including our commercial BESS service program. As our portfolio grows in size and variety, you'll help shape how Tech Ops works. When a system underperforms, clients will look to you for a clear answer. We're looking for an experienced solar and storage professional who has worked both in the field and in the office, and who wants to work directly with clients and service partners.
What You'll Do At Omnidian we believe in trust and autonomy. How you create an impact is ultimately up to you. Here is an outline of some of the things you’ll be doing:
Technical Expertise and Client Engagement (45%)
Be the primary technical contact for assigned clients across about 250-350 MW of distributed solar assets
Review service visit reports before they go to clients, and join weekly client check-in calls to answer technical questions as they come up
Draft scopes of work for service, repair, and retrofit activities that field service partners can follow and quote
Maintain strong working relationships with clients, field service partners, internal teammates, and other asset stakeholders
Operational Support and Field Coordination (20%)
Investigate issues in site monitoring platforms, trace faults from the array through the inverter, MV collection, and utility interconnection, and start the work to restore or improve performance
Create, manage, and oversee tickets for planned and unplanned service
Coordinate service activities with field service partners, and review their quotes against the scope before work starts
Support onsite technicians during service work and check-out calls
Work with outside engineering firms on retrofits, repowering, and redesigns
Battery Storage, QA/QC, and Continuous Improvement (15%)
Support our commercial BESS (battery energy storage system) program alongside the program lead, and use what we learn in the field to expand and improve our offerings
Oversee BESS service with OEMs and field partners, and diagnose alarms and hardware faults
Help run Omnidian's QA/QC program: review inspection and commissioning findings, and write and update SOPs
Strategy and special projects (20%)
Develop our MV equipment strategy and manage our MV service and testing partners, and bring them in early on interconnection, outage, and failure work
Lead an annual review of our preventive maintenance and aerial inspection reports to identify large remediation and repowering projects
Plan and scope special projects on older systems and follow them through execution
Work with Sales and Go-to-Market teams on new and existing products: give technical input on scope and pricing, and review contracts before signing to catch operational risk
Who You Are You have a safety first mindset, never allowing the compromise safety for convenience
You manage several priorities at once and make decisions without waiting to be told.
You know when to handle an issue yourself and when to escalate it.
You work from a process and catch details others miss.
You write things down: procedures, scopes, and project plans that other people can follow.
You pick up new tools and systems quickly as the business changes.
You stay level when a client is upset or a site is down, and you can bring the conversation back to the facts.
You write and speak clearly, whether the reader is a client or a technician.
Where Tech Ops is Headed Tech Ops is more reactive today than we want it to be. We're putting defined processes around the work we repeat, and you'll help build them and lead parts of it.
Service visit review, scope drafting, quote review, inspection and commissioning review, and BESS alarm triage will each get a written procedure, an owner, and a quality check, so results don't depend on who picks up the ticket.
Many of our assets today range from a few hundred kW to a few MW. We expect to take on more mid-size and large systems, from 5 to 15 MW with some larger, including community solar, for QA/QC and service. Bigger sites mean more MV equipment and more utility involvement, and often larger storage. Over time we want this person to be our in-house lead on:
MV equipment and partners: maintenance standards, testing intervals, spares, and failure response for transformers, switchgear, and protective relays, and the service partners who support them
Older systems: remediation, repowering, spare parts management and major component replacement on aging sites
QA/QC and service on larger solar and storage sites, expanding and improving our inspection and service offerings to better suit those products
Experience You'll Need 4+ years in solar, including at least 2 years of hands-on field work (technician, installer, or OEM field service engineer) and at least 2 years in operations, asset management, field service coordination, or technical account management
At least 2 years of direct technical experience on solar assets of 1 MW or larger, including 600 to 1500 Vdc PV architecture and 3-phase AC connections, with root-cause troubleshooting from array strings to central inverters
Solid understanding of National Electrical Code requirements for PV and energy storage (Articles 690, 691, 705, 706) as applied to field inspections, testing, and repair
OSHA certification; 10 hour minimum, must hold or be willing to obtain
Working understanding of medium-voltage systems, including collection circuits, utility interconnection standards, and protective relays (SEL or equivalent)
Working knowledge of commercial energy storage systems, including inverter behavior, BMS alarm diagnosis, and hardware fault troubleshooting
Experience writing or reviewing scopes of work, service agreements, customer contracts, and manufacturer warranties well enough to spot gaps and risk
Ability to review electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, site designs, and technical submittals
Experience using telemetry and DAS monitoring tools to tell a real operational fault from a telemetry offline condition
Experience with ticketing platforms (Salesforce, Zendesk), plus strong Google Workspace and Excel skills
Experience That’s a Plus Experience on 5 MW+ solar or storage sites, including community solar
Deep MV expertise, including transformer, switchgear, and relay testing or settings review, and experience working with MV service partners
Experience scoping remediation, repowering, or major retrofit projects on older systems
Experience analyzing PM or drone inspection data across a large portfolio
Quality assurance, thermography, or commissioning experience, including building punchlists and evaluating system terminations
Advanced expertise in commercial battery storage, including hands-on field service, commissioning, or warranty claim management
OSHA 30 Hour certification, NFPA 70E electrical safety training
NABCEP certification
Hands-on Salesforce experience
