Street Lighting Highways Engineer Hourly Rate: £50 Location: Manchester Job Type: Part-time, Contract We are seeking a Street Lighting Engineer to undertake a lead consultant role in Manchester. This position involves complex technical, procedural, and legislative matters in a professional and customer-focused technical service. The successful candidate will lead and be accountable for the delivery of a range of technical projects, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and contributing to the Council’s corporate aims and objectives. Day-to-day of the role: Lead an innovative, forward-thinking technical consultancy function for street lighting, ensuring solutions are delivered in line with customer and legislative requirements. Lead on the delivery of work packages using project management methodology, ensuring compliance with organisational objectives and internal and legislative guidelines. Continuously identify and champion opportunities to deliver improvements in project, programme, and maintenance service delivery. Develop successful internal and external relationships and secure stakeholder commitment through effective negotiation and communication. Analyse and interpret legislation, presenting complex technical matters clearly to a range of stakeholders, and make informed recommendations to support corporate objectives. Represent the City Council as an expert witness at enquiries, tribunals, and hearings when required. Manage a range of assigned resources to ensure continuous improvement in service delivery, which may include direct line management or matrix management of a team. Required Skills & Qualifications: Hold an undergraduate degree or MSc in a relevant discipline OR hold a HNC / HND in Engineering or relevant equivalent OR be a Chartered or Incorporated Engineering with a relevant institution membership. Proven experience in leading technical projects and initiatives within a relevant service area. Familiarity with project management methodologies and ability to interpret complex legislation and technical data. Experience in negotiation and developing/maintaining effective internal and external relationships. Ability to work on a rota basis, including out of hours as required to meet customer demand.
