Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3-4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

First assessment criterion is pedagogical skills, second is scientific skills. When evaluating pedagogical skills demonstrated competences covering a larger spectrum of the public health science areas such as social epidemiology, global health, human rights and health promotion interventions will be especially appreciated as well as demonstrated ability to work with students with different subject backgrounds and work experiences. Experience and proficiencies within higher education pedagogics in the subject area has to be documented and proven. Assessment of pedagogical skills concern ability to plan, complete tasks within given frameworks, carrying out and evaluate teaching activities, supervise and examine, develop courses as well as experience from course- and program directorship in areas relevant for the position. Experience of fieldwork in areas relevant for the subject area and experience of work within international bodies are of merits. The ability to teach in Swedish is of merit.

In the assessment of scientific skills, particular emphasis will be put on merits in the spectrum of the public health science areas such as social epidemiology, global health, human rights and health promotion interventions. Capability to independently initiate and carry out research within relevant areas for the employment, to obtain external funding as well as recent publications in international peer-reviewed journals is advantageous.

In addition, administrative skills and ability to interact with non-academic institutions and to disseminate and utilize research results is of merit. In addition, personal qualities such as accuracy and flexibility, and shown ability to work independently and to cooperate will be taken into account. Subject area description

Public health science deals with population health at a local, national and international level. It focuses on factors that affect population health development such as poverty, social inequality, gender, ethnicity and individual lifestyle factors, yet also societal strategies to prevent disease and promote health. The public health competence area also covers policy and intervention formulation and analysis that aim to promote health equity goals. Included is also methods for various forms of evaluations, focusing on e.g. whether specific health outcomes are achieved through an intervention, if interventions are cost effective as well as if policies, guidelines and specific priorities in health care and other sectors of society benefit some groups more than others.

Job assignments

The work tasks include teaching activities and course directorship, which among other things include planning, organizing and managing courses in public health together with other teachers. Teaching at courses directed by other teachers is also part of the work. In addition, program administration, student contacts, pedagogical development work as well as cooperation with relevant actors within and outside the academy is included. Teaching at other programmes at the Sahlgrenska Academy can take place. In addition, employees are expected to work actively towards the achievement of the institute’s goals and objectives as well as participate in joint activities. We welcome applications that combine teaching with externally funded research.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

To be qualified for employment as Senior Lecturer the applicant must have completed a PhD in a relevant subject area and demonstrated teaching skills. Applicants must be able to teach in English.

The position is placed at the Institute of Medicine, Section of Epidemiology and Social medicine (EPSO). The section is responsible for Master's programmes in global public health as well as for courses in social medicine and social pharmacy. Research at EPSO focuses on health related lifestyle factors, life course epidemiology and the importance of social determinants for health and disease. EPSO is a inter-professional and multidisciplinary environment.
