Job Description

The successful candidate will work with Prof Lam Ping Koy on Telecom Wavelength Photon Storage with RF rephasing under a project on Quantum Memory and Quantum Transduction.

We are seeking a research scientist to work on the development of optical quantum memory platforms based on rare-earth-ion-doped crystals, with an emphasis on achieving long storage times. The successful candidate will be required to undertake the following key tasks of the project:

  • Perform extensive cryogenic optical experiments toward realising long-lived quantum storage, using rare-earth-ion–doped solid-state systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and modify laser-based quantum memory experimental platforms, including tunable lasers, frequency-stabilized laser systems, optical modulators, cryogenic setups, and magnetic-field control.
  • Implement and optimise quantum memory protocols relevant to long storage times, including coherence-preserving techniques using radio frequency pulses.
  • Conduct systematic optical spectroscopy and coherence characterisation, extracting key performance metrics such as optical linewidths, coherence times, and storage lifetimes.
  • Contribute to technical reports, manuscripts, and project documentation.

Qualifications

PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Quantum Science, Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Skills:

  • Strong experimental background in cryogenic optical spectroscopy and laser-based experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience with quantum memory protocols targeting long storage times.
  • Programming language (Matlab and Python)

Experience:

Candidates with prior experience in rare-earth-ion spectroscopy, optical coherence control, or solid-state quantum memories will be strongly preferred.
