Accountabilities: The Sr. BESS Electrical Engineer will lead the electrical engineering strategy and execution for utility-scale battery storage projects, ensuring designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory expectations while supporting project success. Key responsibilities include: Develop, review, and optimize electrical engineering packages, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical layouts, grounding designs, and cable routing documentation. Lead the design and integration of BESS electrical systems, including power conversion systems (PCS), battery enclosures, medium-voltage and low-voltage transformers, and switchgear. Perform and validate electrical engineering calculations, including cable sizing, equipment selection, load assessments, and system performance evaluations. Support balance-of-plant (BOP) integration by coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and ensuring alignment across project requirements. Review technical documentation, engineering studies, and vendor submissions to confirm accuracy and compliance with project specifications. Apply industry standards and best practices, ensuring all designs comply with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, UL, IEC, and utility interconnection requirements. Collaborate with internal teams, clients, vendors, and project stakeholders to resolve technical challenges and maintain project timelines. Mentor engineering teams by sharing technical expertise and supporting continuous improvement across design processes. Requirements: The ideal candidate is an experienced electrical engineering professional with deep expertise in Battery Energy Storage Systems, power systems design, and utility-scale renewable energy projects. Required qualifications and skills include: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline. 8+ years of professional electrical engineering experience. 3–5+ years of direct experience working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Proven experience designing or reviewing utility-scale BESS projects, preferably with a BESS integrator or renewable energy developer. Strong proficiency with power system modeling and engineering analysis tools, including ETAP and SKM. Advanced understanding of electrical system design, medium-voltage and low-voltage equipment integration, and grid interconnection processes. Strong knowledge of industry codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, IEEE, UL, and IEC. Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical review skills. Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with experience working effectively in remote, cross-functional environments.
