Senior/Research Lab Technician

Role Scope:

The job holder will be responsible for the daily operations and technical support of the Biology Research Laboratories within the Scholastic Renaissance Centre (SRC). The role primarily supports student research projects, research-related activities, practical work, events and workshops conducted in the research laboratories.

Job Description

A. Laboratory Duties & Operations

• Good working knowledge of biology, microbiology, chemistry and biochemistry laboratory practices, including the preparation and handling of reagents, solutions and microorganisms.
• Able to provide technical support and hands-on guidance to students undertaking research projects and laboratory activities in the SRC research laboratories.
• Able to review student research proposals and risk assessments, providing guidance on appropriate laboratory practices and safety measures.
• Competent in laboratory preparation, equipment operation, routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting.
• Good understanding of laboratory safety, risk assessment, standard operating procedures, safe work procedures and chemical/biological waste management.
• Able to monitor compliance with established laboratory safety requirements and procedures.
• Able to coordinate and support laboratory attendants where required.

B. Administration & Coordination

Able to manage laboratory inventory, procurement, receiving of goods, invoices and related documentation for the SRC Biology Research Laboratories.

Maintain accurate records and documentation relating to laboratory operations equipment, materials and procedures.

Coordinate the preparation and availability of materials, reagents and equipment required for student research projects, research-related activities, events and workshops.

Work effectively with students, teachers, project mentors, laboratory staff and other stakeholders supporting SRC research activities.

Resourceful, adaptable and detail-oriented, with good problem-solving and organizational skills.

Able to multitask and work independently as well as collaboratively.

Willing to support department events, workshops, sabbatical programs and other school activities as required.

Job Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of relevant laboratory experience, preferably in a research laboratory, education institution or similar setting.
• Diploma or Degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Life Sciences, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
• Experience supporting student research projects or laboratory practicals would be an advantage.
• For Senior Technician appointment, candidates should demonstrate greater depth of technical experience and the ability to independently manage laboratory operations and support research activities.
• Relevant training or certification in laboratory safety, biosafety or chemical safety would be an advantage.
