Runbook SME Responsibilities
Runbook SME is responsible for collecting, creating, testing, and governing complex task activities such as disaster recovery activities (activation, dry test, drill, etc.), application migration activities, data center modernization, and more, into a single document (runbook) that contains all the environment details and contacts’ information, alongside the required activities to achieve such complex tasks.
This role is achieved through four stages:
Data collection and interviews
Runbook creation
Runbook testing
Governance
Requirements
Understanding of cloud technologies and migration methodologies
Good knowledge of known virtualization platforms, preferably vSphere and HyperV; other platforms will also be considered
Good knowledge of known containerization platforms, preferably OpenShift Container Platform (OCP); other platforms will also be considered
Good knowledge of enterprise IT architecture, for example, storage and/or backup configuration and replication options, different OS deployment and management techniques, and network components and their configuration
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Logical and design thinking
Problem-solving skills
Data modeling and data visualization
IT service management knowledge
Experience in data center migration discovery phase, planning phase, and execution
Experience with automated discovery tools, e.g., Device42, vRealize Network Insight (vRNI), etc.
Excellent skills in using advanced features of Microsoft Excel (data modeling and analysis)
Experience in conducting workshops and preparing migration strategies, migration plans, runbooks, and status reports
Good understanding of cloud and infrastructure components and migration methodology
Good documentation skills
Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills
Certification and Education
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent
Preferred data engineering certificate(s)
CCNA, Network Essentials, CompTIA Network+ or equivalent
ITIL V3 and/or V4 Foundation
Certified by one of the major cloud providers
Desirable Skills and Experience
Experience in delivering engagements under PRINCE2, PMP, or TOGAF frameworks
Understanding of IT service management (ITSM) framework(s)
Experience in presenting at a user group, trade show, or similar events is highly desirable
