About the Position: The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and -operated manufacturing center located in New York. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813.

Major duties

  • Serves as working leader of 3 or more employees in accomplishing trades and labor work.
  • Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, and starts work (e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led).
  • Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • Guarantees workforce supply while continuously reviewing work in progress to ensure compliance with supervisors instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Toolmaker Leader without more than normal supervision which includes 1) Effectively lead others performing Toolmaker duties; (2) ensure needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available; (3) fabricate many common types of components, tooling, dies, and jigs utilizing various types of machining equipment and processes; (4) Apply knowledge of machine shop procedures and techniques in planning, laying out, machining, assembling, and hand fitting and finishing work to precise dimensions; and (5) Read and interpret blueprints or sketches - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Lead or Supervise Ability To Use Hand Tools for Machine Shop Ability To Use Shop Drawings Knowledge of Metals Measurement and Layout Operation of Machine Tools Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Required to stand, stoop, bend and reach. Required to lift/carry up to 44 lbs. Mechanical lifting devices/other employees are available to assist with lifts of 45 lbs and over. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside in a machine shop environment wherein there is danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive particles, and hot metal; possibility of skin irritations from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive fingers, compounds; danger to the hands and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces, and moving parts of machines. Subject to the usual dirt and noise of machine shop activities.
