CAD Designer (Part-Time, Remote)
The CAD Designer (Part-Time, Remote) supports the Aspen Manufacturing engineering team with CAD design, documentation, and bill of materials (BOM) work for residential and commercial HVAC products. This position reports to the Sr. Director of Engineering. Working directly with design engineers, this role produces and revises 3D models and production drawings, creates and maintains bills of material, and develops the written documentation that supports manufacturing — including work instructions, assembly documentation, and product literature. This is a part-time position performed fully remotely, with scheduling flexibility within standard U.S. business hours.
Job Responsibilities
Model and detail sheet metal, tube, and coil components and assemblies for HVAC products using SolidWorks; create and revise production drawings and documentation
Incorporate redlines, markups, and engineering changes into existing models and drawings, maintaining accuracy and adherence to department standards
Create and maintain accurate bills of material (BOMs) in the ERP environment for assigned components and assemblies
Prepare engineering change documentation and supporting files for assigned changes
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including work instructions, assembly documentation, installation and service literature, and product specification sheets
Produce wiring diagrams, wire kit documentation, and configuration-driven assembly documentation as assigned
Partner with design engineers to translate design intent into released documentation, working independently against defined scope and deadlines
Apply department drawing standards, part numbering conventions, GD&T practices, and revision control procedures consistently across assigned work
Communicate progress, questions, and completion status to the engineering team on a regular cadence
Maintain working familiarity with applicable AHRI, UL, ASHRAE, and DOE standards as they affect drawing content and documentation
Minimum Requirements:
Associate's degree in drafting and design, computer-aided design, engineering technology, or a related technical field; or an equivalent combination of technical coursework and directly relevant design experience
Two years or more of CAD design experience in a manufacturing environment
Proficiency in parametric 3D CAD modeling and detailed engineering drawing creation; SolidWorks strongly preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in Autodesk (Inventor, AutoCAD) or NX, with the ability to transition to SolidWorks, will be considered
Experience creating and maintaining bills of material, preferably within an ERP environment
Demonstrated technical writing ability, including work instructions, assembly documentation, or product literature
Working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, tube and coil manufacturing, GD&T, and drawing standards
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage assigned deliverables to deadline with limited supervision
Reliable high-speed internet connection and a dedicated work space suitable for remote work
Must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States
10% domestic travel, as needed
Preferred Requirements:
HVAC product experience in a manufacturing or product development environment
ERP system experience (Infor Syteline, JD Edwards, SAP, or similar) for BOM management
Experience with configuration-driven electrical documentation and wire kit development
Prior remote or distributed team experience
Certification or formal coursework in GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
Prior experience in residential or light commercial HVAC equipment manufacturing
Competencies/Skills:
Self-directed, with the discipline to manage assigned work and deadlines without daily oversight
Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated commitment to documentation and data accuracy
Clear and proactive written communication, which carries more weight in a remote role than in an onsite one
Organized approach to managing concurrent assignments and competing priorities
Comfortable asking questions and escalating blockers early rather than working around them
Effective at working in teams towards a time-bound set of goals and deliverables
Continuous improvement mindset
