HEAD OF ENGINEERING TECHNICAL

Salary:£60,000 – £65,000 per annum subject to experience | Full-time | Monday–Friday | Nottingham (On-Site — NET Depot)

Are you a senior engineering leader with the technical depth to own strategy and delivery across complex, multi-discipline infrastructure asset classes? Do you thrive on turning whole-life cost thinking into a credible, deliverable programme - and on building the team that executes it? If so, the Head of Engineering Technical is an opportunity to apply your experience and passion to shape the future of Nottingham's tram network.

Nottingham Trams Ltd (NTL) operates and maintains the NET (Nottingham Express Transit) tram network under a long-term PFI concession. We're now looking for an exceptional Head of Engineering Technical to join our Senior Management Team, taking ownership of our technical engineering function - from developing asset class strategies and whole-life cost models through to the delivery of renewals programmes and supply chain management.

Why join us?

At Nottingham Trams, we believe in We Care. We Commit. We Imagine. If you're a collaborative technical leader who wants real ownership, meaningful stakeholder engagement, and the chance to leave a lasting mark on critical urban infrastructure, we want to hear from you.

Your role will focus on:

  • Asset Class Ownership - Hold technical engineering authority across all infrastructure disciplines: track; civils, structures and drainage; power and OLE; and signalling and communications. Define and maintain asset class strategies, condition registers, and maintenance specifications aligned to whole-life cost and future asset condition standards.
  • Forward Work Planning & Lifecycle Management - Own the cross-discipline forward maintenance and renewal work plan. Drive the infrastructure whole-life cost model (WLCM) and lead asset class inputs to annual maintenance and renewals plans, ensuring network infrastructure liability is proactively managed.
  • Project & Programme Delivery - Lead all renewal and capital project delivery across the network, holding the team to account for time, cost, and quality. Own the project safety framework including CDM compliance, RAMS, and contractor SSOW, ensuring safety is designed in from the outset.
  • Supply Chain & Stakeholder Management - Develop and manage relationships with key contractors and framework partners, driving performance against KPIs and safety obligations. Act as the engineering technical interface with line-of-route stakeholders, statutory bodies, and regulatory authorities.
  • Technical Leadership & Innovation - Set engineering standards, resolve technical disputes, and act as the engineering authority across infrastructure disciplines. Champion digital tools, data analytics, and predictive maintenance to improve asset performance and reduce whole-life cost. Manage and optimize forward maintenance plan detail to ensure continuous improvement is implemented, not just talked about.
  • Team Leadership & Capability Development - Lead and develop the Engineering Technical team, building succession and technical capability across all disciplines. Drive a culture of engineering excellence, delivery focus, and continuous improvement.

What we're looking for:

  • Substantial engineering leadership experience in rail, light rail, highways, or comparable asset management industries.
  • Held technical authority at a professional engineering level, with appropriate qualifications to underpin a practical and delivery focused mindset.
  • A proven track record leading complex project programmes, with full accountability for time, cost, and quality.
  • Experience in whole-life cost modelling, asset lifecycle planning, CDM compliance, and RAMS development.
  • Strong commercial acumen and a track record of managing contractor relationships and supply chain performance.
  • The ability to build and sustain high-performing technical teams and contribute effectively at Senior Management Team level to broader business cross-functional performance.
  • A strong communicator with adaptable people skills and a can-do attitude.
  • A relevant engineering qualification (working towards or holding a degree ideally with Chartered status).

What's in it for you?

  • Competitive salary
  • Free tram travel for you and your dependants
  • Free on-site parking at NET Depot
  • Pension contribution / Salary Sacrifice
  • Medical cover with Westfield Health
  • Exclusive retail discounts
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Health & wellbeing programme
  • Senior Management Team membership with real strategic influence across the directorate and wider business
