Performance Criteria

Main Purpose (Role): The Shaft Mechanical Supervisor is responsible for supervising the inspection, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of shaft mechanical infrastructure and associated equipment across surface and underground operations. The role ensures maximum equipment reliability, availability, and operational efficiency while minimizing downtime and ensuring all maintenance activities comply with engineering standards, statutory regulations, and mine safety procedures.

Key Performance Area’s (Responsibilities):

• Supervise the inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of shaft mechanical equipment and infrastructure.
• Coordinate preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to ensure safe and reliable shaft operations.
• Lead mechanical troubleshooting, equipment failure analysis, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to improve equipment reliability.
• Supervise the maintenance of shaft steelwork, guides, conveyances, skips, cages, shaft gates, loading arrangements, and associated mechanical systems.
• Allocate manpower, tools, equipment, and maintenance resources to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
• Monitor equipment condition and identify mechanical defects, abnormal wear, and potential failure points for timely corrective action.
• Coordinate planned maintenance shutdowns and emergency breakdown repairs to minimize operational downtime.
• Ensure compliance with maintenance schedules, engineering procedures, statutory regulations, and Company safety standards.
• Prepare and review maintenance reports, inspection records, risk assessments, work permits, and shift handover documentation.
• Ensure all maintenance work is executed in accordance with Permit-to-Work (PTW) requirements and mine safety procedures.
• Supervise contractors and maintenance personnel to ensure work is performed to the required quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Plant Engineering, or an equivalent engineering discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant supervisory experience. Technician Part III Certificate (Mechanical) with a minimum of 5 years of practical experience in shaft mechanical maintenance, including supervisory responsibilities.

Essential / Advantageous Essential Valid MINCOM Certification, Mine Safety Supervisory Certification, Permit-to-Work (PTW) System Training, and Risk Assessment Training are essential requirements for this role. Additional certifications in Lifting and Hoisting Operations, Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), First Aid, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS/SAP) will be considered an added advantage.

Essential Technical Competencies Advanced proficiency in shaft mechanical systems, shaft infrastructure maintenance, conveyances, shaft steelwork, guides, skips, cages, loading arrangements, mechanical fault diagnosis, preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment reliability, maintenance planning, Root Cause Analysis, team supervision, and safe maintenance practices within a mining environment.

Experience

Job Related Experience Required Time Span Essential / Advantageous Minimum of 5–8 years of practical experience in shaft mechanical maintenance, shaft infrastructure, mine hoisting support systems, heavy industrial mechanical maintenance, or mining operations, including supervisory experience. Experience in preventive maintenance, shutdown planning, equipment inspections, mechanical troubleshooting, contractor supervision, and statutory mine safety compliance is required.
