We are looking for an Assistant Professor in the field of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry . We have  1-3 positions open at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University. 

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). 

Job description 

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with an exceptional track record of internationally leading research that complement the research interests of the MET faculty within fields of cell biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry. We particularly encourage applications from outstanding early-career scientists with proven excellence and ambitious research goals. 

We seek applicants with a compelling vision for advancing and renewing the field through innovative research questions, novel methodological approaches, and interdisciplinary collaboration.   

You will be expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in your topic area at the highest level. Active collaboration with local, national and global research partners, as well as with clinical stakeholders and industry is encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research as well as nurture interactions with the wider society. You are also expected to contribute to degree education in line with your own expertise. 

The positions will be placed in one of the three basic science units of the MET faculty, determined by the research profile and interests of the selected applicant. 

In BIO unit, research focuses on fundamental cellular processes and immunology. We utilize molecular genetics, biophysics, biochemistry, systems and cell biology.

In MEDI unit, genome wide methods, computational approaches and experimental models are developed and utilized to understand the mechanisms of diseases, e.g. in celiac disease and cancer.

In TECH unit, interdisciplinary research areas include cell technologies for various tissue and disease states, research in biomaterials, biomedical micro- and nanotechnologies, health informatics, bioimaging, biophysics, biosensors and body-on-chip technologies.

Requirements 

You should have an applicable doctoral degree  and postdoctoral training in a relevant area for pursuing a tenure track career in the field of cell biology, molecular biology, or biochemistry. Teaching experience is regarded favorably.

For the Assistant Professor position, we also require:

proof and track record on scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence,  

teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position, and

ability and potential for applying and acquiring external funding. 

The positions require good communication skills in English. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment for management of administrative responsibilities and for enhancing competitiveness and societal impact. Support for language studies is offered.

We offer an initial appointment for Assistant Professor for five years. Subject to successful performance evaluation, you will advance in tenure track model and become a permanent member of the faculty staff. You will enjoy a substantial startup package, subject to negotiation, and receive support throughout the five-year period to facilitate the establishment of an internationally competitive research programme. Tampere University provides state-of-the-art research infrastructure and core facilities , including for example bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, imaging, biomaterial and micro- and nanostructure fabrication and characterization, and animal facilities. 

The planned starting date in the position is in the fall of 2027, or as mutually agreed upon by both parties.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System . A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4800-5100 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.  A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
