Shape the future of education technology

At IST, we're building the cloud platform that powers educational solutions used by more than five million users across Europe. Unlike most cloud teams, we run our own cloud — on our own hardware, in our own data center. That means the abstraction stops with us: when a node misbehaves, there's no support ticket to a hyperscaler.

There's a rack, and someone who knows it.

We're looking for a Cloud Engineer who finds that appealing rather than daunting.

About the role

As a Cloud Engineer, you'll help design, build and operate the IST Cloud Platform — from the automation and orchestration layers our developers build on, all the way down to the switches, servers and cabling that carry it. You'll do this together with our Cloud Engineering team, architects, developers and stakeholders, whether the work happens at a keyboard or in a rack.

In practice, around a quarter of your time will be spent physically on site in the data center. Not as a separate duty, but as a natural part of the work: expanding capacity for a new cluster the team has just automated, replacing a switch that's been throwing errors in your own monitoring, tracing a network issue that turns out to be a cable rather than a config. Owning the platform end to end is what makes this role different from a pure cloud position.

The role is based at our office in Roskilde, Denmark, with the primary data center within reach. Some travel is required, primarily to our office in Växjö, Sweden.

Key responsibilities

Design, build and operate the IST Cloud Platform across the full stack — from physical hardware to the self-service tooling our developers use

Automate VMs, containers, storage and networking using Ansible, Terraform, Puppet and PowerShell DSC

Plan and carry out capacity expansions: from sizing and procurement to racking, cabling, provisioning and putting the capacity into production

Diagnose and resolve issues wherever they originate — including replacing switches, disks and other failed components on site, and handling firmware, BIOS and driver lifecycle across the fleet

Support reliable, scalable developer platforms, CI/CD pipelines, orchestration and self-service tools

Manage databases, object storage and monitoring/logging stacks, with observability that spans both the platform and the hardware underneath it

Contribute to access, identity and compliance work in line with ISO, PCI and internal policies, including physical access and site security

Ensure robust backup and disaster recovery plans are in place, tested against real hardware failure scenarios

Coordinate with hardware vendors and support partners (Dell, Cisco and similar) on spare parts, RMAs and escalations

Your profile

You have a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, network engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, along with solid experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure automation and DevOps practices.

Just as importantly, you're comfortable at both ends of the stack. You can discuss platform architecture with our developers in the morning and spend the afternoon in the rack with a screwdriver, and you see those as the same job rather than two different ones. Working in a data center environment — noisy, cold, occasionally at short notice — is something you take in stride.

We also look for:

Hands-on experience with server, storage and network hardware — Cisco, Dell, KVM, VMware or similar

Practical understanding of data center fundamentals: power, cooling, rack design, structured cabling

Strong knowledge of security, compliance and governance in cloud environments

Strategic thinking and the ability to translate business needs into technical solutions

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

A collaborative, decisive and pragmatic approach to problem-solving

A valid driver's license and the ability to reach the data center when needed

What we offer

This is a full-time, permanent position. We apply an office-first policy, and given the hands-on nature of this role, regular physical presence at the office and in the datacenter is part of the job. Within that framework, there's room for flexibility on the days where your work doesn't require you on site.

You'll join an international and collaborative environment where you'll have real ownership, influence over strategic technology decisions, and the chance to help shape the future of learning.
