Job Summary

The Field Engineer identifies, investigates, and resolves operational issues in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and PUB Water networks, ensuring optimal network performance and reliable meter communication through field deployment and technical support.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, investigate, and diagnose operational issues in AMI and PUB Water networks using cross-system checks to confirm issue origins and determine need for field diagnosis
  • Conduct on-site investigations of radio communications equipment and electricity meters to perform root cause analysis and initiate appropriate remedial actions
  • Provide on-site technical assistance to troubleshoot and repair equipment and software applications, serving as an escalation point for complex issues
  • Create work orders and service tickets to ensure timely completion of remedial works and resolution of issues within service level requirements
  • Escalate recurring or systemic issues through problem tickets for further engineering analysis
  • Lead field deployment of AMI communication infrastructure including collectors, repeaters, and access points
  • Conduct RF site surveys and network coverage analysis to optimize communication topology and network performance
  • Coordinate meter installation programs ensuring proper network registration and commissioning of meters
  • Perform field testing of new AMI technologies and communication protocols to validate performance and integration
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for AMI field operations and troubleshooting procedures

Preferred competencies and qualifications

  • Hands-on experience (1+ years) with major AMI platforms such as Itron, Landis+Gyr, Sensus, or Silver Spring Networks
  • Knowledge of RF communications including RF propagation, antenna theory, and wireless networking principles
  • Understanding of network protocols including mesh networking, TCP/IP, cellular communications, and PLC technologies
  • Proficiency with test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators, and AMI diagnostic tools
  • Familiarity with smart meter hardware, communication modules, and utility metering standards
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and network mapping applications
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills applied to complex technical issues in field environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency in technical writing, network diagramming, and reporting tools to produce clear documentation
