About Us

DPO Privacy Centre (East Africa) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing a data protection and privacy culture across East Africa through advisory, training, research, and public awareness. Our mission is to make data protection accessible, easy to understand and easy to implement, and our vision is to be East Africa's trusted voice in data protection and governance.

Founded by a team of young professionals, we work across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan. Our work includes research, advocacy, policy development and trainings. Our work is guided by four principles: Clarity, Integrity, Accessibility, and Collaboration.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a committed, self-driven Editorial Lead to take charge of our publications portfolio. You will ensure that everything we publish is accurate, clear, and credible, in keeping with our commitment to making data protection easy to understand. You will also help build the region's first dedicated East African Data Protection Journal. This a volunteer leadership role for someone who wants to shape privacy scholarship and discourse in East Africa.

Key Responsibilities

•         East African Law Monthly: lead the editing and timely release of our monthly newsletter.

•         FARAGHA Magazine: manage the editorial pipeline, including setting themes, sourcing contributors, and taking editions from draft to publication.

•         East African Data Protection Guide (annual): coordinate the annual edition, including issuing calls for contributions, recruiting and liaising with country contributors, managing timelines, editing contributions for accuracy, consistency, and style, and compiling the final publication.

•         East African Data Protection Journal: lead its establishment, including developing the editorial policy, scope, and submission guidelines; helping constitute an editorial and peer review board; managing calls for papers and the peer review process; and working toward recognised academic standards such as ISSN registration and indexing.

•         Quality assurance: review case commentaries, research briefs, regulatory submissions, and other outputs from the Research team before publication on our website, Substack, and other channels.

•         Editorial standards: develop and maintain an editorial style guide, citation standards, and a publishing calendar.

•         Mentorship: guide contributors and provide constructive editorial feedback.

QualificationsRequired

•        A bachelor's degree in Law, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, Information Technology, or a related field.

•        At least 3 years of experience in editing, legal or academic writing, research, or publishing.

•        A solid understanding of data protection and privacy law, including the frameworks in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and the wider region, and global standards such as the GDPR.

•        Familiarity with academic publishing, including peer review, citation styles (e.g. OSCOLA, APA), and journal standards.

•        Experience coordinating multiple contributors and managing collaborative publications to deadline.

•        Excellent written English and a sharp eye for detail, structure, and argument, with the ability to turn complex legal material into plain, accessible language.

•        Self-motivated, reliable, and able to take full ownership of outcomes with minimal supervision.

Desirable

•        A postgraduate degree (LLM, MA, or equivalent) in a relevant field.

•        Prior experience on the editorial team of a journal, law review, magazine, or newsletter.

•        Own published work in privacy, technology law, or policy.

•        A privacy certification such as CIPP/E, CIPM, or CDPO.

•        Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Substack, Mailchimp, Google Workspace, or Open Journal Systems (OJS).

What You Will Gain

•        A leadership title and recognition across the Centre's flagship publications.

•        Visibility and networking with regulators, DPOs, academics, and privacy professionals across the region.

•        Access to the Centre's trainings, webinars, events, and capacity-building programmes.

•        An opportunity to shape the growth of privacy scholarship and practice in East Africa.
