Position Overview

We are looking to appoint a Secondary Science Teaching Assistant to join our high-quality teaching team. The candidate will support the delivery of high-quality science education across Key Stages 3 and 4 by assisting students in accessing the curriculum, reinforcing learning in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and providing targeted support to nurture groups and students requiring additional academic intervention to promote progress and achievement.

The Science Teaching Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality science education across Key Stages 3 and 4, with a particular focus on nurture groups and students requiring additional intervention. Working closely with Science teachers, the role involves reinforcing learning in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, delivering targeted support, monitoring student progress, and helping students access the curriculum and achieve their potential. The post holder will also assist with lesson preparation, practical activities, resource organisation, and wider departmental support.

Key responsibilities:

Provide targeted academic support and intervention for students in KS3 and KS4 Science.

Reinforce and re-teach key concepts in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Monitor student progress and maintain accurate intervention records.

Support teachers with lesson preparation, practical activities, and classroom organisation.

Work collaboratively with the Science department to improve student outcomes.

Maintain high expectations for behaviour, attendance, and achievement.

Follow school safeguarding, health and safety, and data protection procedures.

Qualifications & experience:

A-levels or degree in a Science-related subject.

GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).

Two years’ experience in a school environment preferred in Secondary Science as learning support or teaching assistant positions.

Experience using school data-tracking systems.

Strong background in Science, with knowledge of KS3 Science and KS4 Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Experience working with young people in an educational setting.

Ability to explain scientific concepts clearly and effectively to students with varying abilities.

Experience supporting students with additional learning needs, SEND, or those requiring academic intervention.

Skills & competencies
