Job Description and Requirements

Waseda Singapore is a Japanese educational institution operating two campuses in Singapore, with a total enrolment of approximately 500 students. Since its establishment in 1983, we have provided education to children from Japanese families living in Singapore and have grown into one of the largest Japanese tuition centres in the country.

Many of our graduates have successfully gained admission to leading private and public schools and universities inJapan.

Candidates must have the communication skills necessary to conduct lessons naturally in both Japanese and English.They must also be able to provide parents with updates on students' academic progress in Japanese.

Key Responsibilities

As a Multi-Subject Secondary SchoolTeacher:

  • Teach at least two of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, andChemistry
  • English:Academic English, Reading, Writing, Essay Writing, Vocabulary, etc.
  • Mathematics:Lower Secondary Mathematics to approximately IGCSE E Mathematics level
  • Physics:Lower Secondary Science to approximately IGCSE Physics level
  • Chemistry:Lower Secondary Science to approximately IGCSE Chemistry level
  • Candidates with experience teaching IB Physics or IB Chemistry, as well as those interested in developing their ability to teach IB subjects in the future, are welcome to apply.

Teaching Material Preparation:

  • Prepare textbooks, worksheets, lesson materials, model answers, and other teaching resources.

Parent and Customer Communication:

  • Provide parents with updates regarding students' classroom performance, level of understanding, areas for improvement, and future learning plans.
  • Participate in parent-teacher meetings when required.
  • Participate in parent information sessions and provide updates on course content and student learning.

Teacher Responsibilities

Lessons are conducted using both Japanese and English. Teachers are expected to switch naturally between the two languages depending on the student's needs and the content of the lesson.

Candidates must also have sufficientJapanese proficiency to clearly communicate students' academic progress to parents and staff. The recruitment process will include an interview and conversational assessment conducted in Japanese.

Candidates must have sufficient subject knowledge to teach at least two of the following four subjects at secondary-school level: English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

For Mathematics, candidates are expected to teach from Lower Secondary Mathematics up to approximately IGCSE E Mathematics level.

For Physics and Chemistry, candidates are expected to teach from Lower Secondary level up to approximately IGCSE level.

For English, we place particular emphasis on the ability to teach Academic English, including Reading, Writing, EssayWriting, and related academic skills, rather than general conversationalEnglish.

Previous experience teaching IB Physics orChemistry is not mandatory. Candidates with strong subject knowledge who are interested in expanding their teaching responsibilities to IB-level courses through training, lesson preparation, and independent study are also encouraged to apply.

As part of the recruitment process, candidates may be asked to complete written assessments in the subjects they intend to teach, as well as conduct a demonstration lesson. We value not only strong subject knowledge, but also the ability to explain concepts clearly and effectively to students.

There are two main types of classes:regular term-time classes and seasonal intensive courses.

Regular classes are generally conducted after school, typically from 5:00 p.m. onwards. During school holiday periods, classes may also be scheduled in the morning.

The standard work schedule is approximately5.5 days per week, consisting of five weekdays plus one Saturday or Sunday every other week. Working schedules may vary depending on the academic term.

Our students range in age from 6 to 18.However, this position is expected to focus primarily on secondary-school-age students.

Teachers are expected to engage students effectively, motivate them to learn, and create a positive and encouraging classroom environment.

Candidate Profile

  • Ability to conduct lessons naturally in both Japanese and English
  • Ability to clearly communicate students' academic progress to parents and staff inJapanese
  • Ability to explain concepts and thought processes clearly rather than simply providing answers
  • Ability to identify where students are struggling and provide appropriate support
  • Ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with secondary-school students
  • Ability to manage classes consisting of multiple students effectively
  • Willingness to receive feedback positively and continuously improve teaching quality
  • Flexibility in adapting to the school's teaching policies, curriculum, and materials rather than relying solely on one's own teaching methods
  • A high level of professionalism in time management, lesson preparation, communication, and other responsibilities
  • Strong flexibility and adaptability as an educator
  • Ability to demonstrate both teamwork and leadership as a member of the teaching team
  • Basic to advanced IT skills required for teaching material preparation and online instruction, including experience using Microsoft Office, Slack, DropboxBusiness, Zoom, and similar tools
