This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.

Major duties

  • Serve as Station Chief for structural and/or aircraft crash firefighting and rescue operations at an assigned fire station managing the daily operations of 10-15 personnel.
  • Ensure that personnel and equipment are in a constant state of readiness for immediate response to firefighting and rescue operations.
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate work assignments for up to three firefighting crews.
  • Supervise personnel in controlling and extinguishing fires, effecting rescue operations, maintaining safety, and mitigating hazardous incidents, utilizing established professional techniques.
  • Respond to hazardous material/Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Explosive (CBRNE)/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) incidents surveying scene for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release.
  • Administer emergency medical care and treatment for illness and injuries of occupational and non-occupational origin for soldiers, dependents, civilian employees, and visitors to the installation.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Directing structural firefighting and rescue operations; 2) Responding to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness to administer direct patient care; 3) Determining the utilization of firefighters and equipment while combating hazardous material incidents; and 4) Assign work and/or crew assignment based on priorities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTSPECIAL PLACEMENT FACTORS: In addition to meeting the experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the following below certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification indicating a future expiration date when applicable. To occupy this position at the time of appointment, you must possess and continue to maintain the following certification:

  • Fire Officer III
  • Fire Instructor II
  • Fire Inspector II
  • HAZMAT Incident Commander
  • Airport Firefighter
