An Application Engineer for Building Automation Systems (BAS) plays a critical role in designing, configuring, and implementing systems that control building functions like HVAC, lighting, energy management, security, and other integrated systems. Their role typically involves both technical and customer-facing responsibilities, ensuring systems meet project specifications, client requirements, and efficiency goals.

Application Engineer – Roles & Responsibilities

  • System Design & Configuration – Design and configure building automation and IoT systems, including HVAC, lighting, security, IAQ, and energy management, using technologies such as KNX, BACnet, Modbus, LoRaWAN, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
  • Programming & Software Development – Develop control logic, program BMS/DDC/PLC controllers, gateways, sensors, and configure communication between different systems and devices.
  • Testing, Commissioning & Troubleshooting – Test, calibrate, commission, and troubleshoot automation systems to ensure reliable operation and compliance with project requirements.
  • Client Interaction & Support – Work with clients, consultants, architects, CTO, and site teams to understand requirements, provide technical support, and conduct system training.
  • Project Documentation & Reporting – Prepare system drawings, manuals, operation guides, as-built documents, testing records, and performance or energy reports.
  • Energy Efficiency & Sustainability – Implement automation and IoT solutions that reduce energy consumption, improve building efficiency, and support sustainability through smart controls and monitoring.
  • Collaboration & Coordination – Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, IT, vendors, and contractors to ensure successful integration and installation of automation systems.
  • Compliance & Standards – Ensure systems comply with relevant building regulations, industry standards, BCA requirements, and Singapore Green Mark standards while keeping up with industry developments.
  • Continuous Improvement & Upgrades – Identify opportunities to improve, upgrade, and expand existing systems while exploring emerging technologies such as IoT, AI, cloud-based automation, and smart building solutions.
