Senior Quality Engineer
Umain is a leading product and technology company expanding in the U.S. market. We’re seeking an experienced Senior Quality Engineer to join our product and technology group in Chicago.
At Umain, you’ll be embedded in cross-functional teams that design, build, and ship high-performing digital products for global brands, bringing a quality-first mindset to every stage of delivery. You’re comfortable running thorough manual and exploratory testing, but your north star is automation: building the frameworks, pipelines, and culture that deliver quality consistently. If you believe quality is everyone’s responsibility, and that the best time to catch a bug is before it’s written, then please keep reading.
This full-time role is based in Chicago at our West Loop office. As part of Umain’s expanding U.S. footprint, you’ll help establish our reputation for engineering excellence, strategy, and delivery in the American market. You must be in Chicago or willing to relocate to be considered for this role, as we require a minimum of 3 days in-office per week. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
What you'll do
AI & Agentic Quality
- Bring quality into agentic development pipelines, making sure test strategy and acceptance criteria are part of the plan that AI agents build from.
- Work closely with developers early in the lifecycle to shape and challenge agentic plans before execution, so issues are caught at the plan stage rather than in the output.
- Design test approaches for non-deterministic applications, such as LLM-powered features, using techniques like evaluation datasets, acceptance thresholds, model-graded evaluation, and regression testing for prompts and model changes.
- Use AI-assisted tooling for test generation, visual regression, and intelligent test selection.
Client & Team Leadership
- Partner with clients, product managers, and engineers to define test strategies, test plans, and acceptance criteria that reflect what matters to the business.
- Champion a shift-left approach, engaging from requirements and design onward, so quality is built into the plan before a line of code is written, by a person or an agent.
- Bring the quality voice to agile ceremonies and explain risk, coverage, and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Shape Umain’s quality engineering capability in the U.S., and collaborate with our global QA capability to help evolve how we work across Umain.
Testing & Automation
- Build, maintain, and scale automated test suites using modern frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium, writing clean, maintainable test code in TypeScript or Python.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous testing on every build.
- Advocate for a testing pyramid approach, prioritizing fast, reliable unit and integration tests alongside end-to-end coverage.
- Test web applications and APIs built on modern stacks such as React/Next.js and Node.js/NestJS, using tools like Postman for API testing.
- Run exploratory testing for new features and edge cases across web and mobile platforms, especially where behavior is hard to script.
- Design and maintain reusable test cases in tools like TestRail or Zephyr, and log and manage defects in Jira with clear reproduction steps and impact assessments.
- Include security in your test approach, from common web and API vulnerabilities (such as the OWASP Top 10) to AI-specific risks like prompt injection and data leakage.
Quality Insight & Continuous Improvement
- Partner with Web, iOS, Android, and Back-end engineers to identify testability gaps early and design features that are easier to verify and automate.
- Monitor test coverage, defect trends, and pipeline health, connecting quality metrics to real client and business outcomes.
- Proactively identify process improvements and share learnings across teams.
Who you are
- 5+ years of professional experience in software quality engineering, with automation as a core part of how you work.
- Experience testing non-deterministic systems, such as AI or LLM-powered applications, and a point of view on how to define “correct” when outputs vary.
- Hands-on experience testing both web and native mobile applications (iOS and Android).
- Already working with AI agents in the development lifecycle, or eager to start.
- Proficient with at least one automation framework (Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium) and comfortable writing test code in TypeScript or Python.
- Experienced with CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into developer workflows.
- Solid understanding of agile methodologies and a genuine shift-left mindset.
- A collaborative team player with a client-focused mindset who sees quality as a shared responsibility, not a gate at the end.
- Curious, methodical, and energized by complex systems and the challenge of finding what others miss.
Bonus experience
- Hands-on experience with security testing tools such as OWASP ZAP or Burp Suite.
- BDD frameworks (Cucumber, Gherkin).
- Performance or load testing (k6, JMeter, or similar).
- Cloud environments, ideally GCP.
- Docker and containerized test environments.
- Observability and monitoring tools.
What we offer
- Work with global brands on diverse, high-impact digital projects.
- A personal coach and a development plan you build together.
