Accountabilities: The Senior Economist will lead research initiatives examining the potential economic consequences of transformative AI and develop rigorous analyses to anticipate systemic risks. This role requires strong economic expertise, creative problem-solving, and the ability to translate complex research into actionable insights for diverse audiences.

Develop economic models to analyze how advanced AI systems may create new systemic risks and economic vulnerabilities.

Build scenarios exploring potential disruptions caused by rapid AI advancement, including labor displacement, deflationary pressures, market concentration, and economic instability.

Evaluate how AI-driven productivity changes may interact with existing economic systems and contribute to inequality or structural disruption.

Analyze shifts in economic power across industries, regions, and demographic groups as AI capabilities continue to evolve.

Identify early warning indicators related to financial system shocks, declining living standards, and broader economic instability.

Translate complex economic research into clear recommendations and insights for policymakers, institutions, and other stakeholders.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams specializing in AI safety, international relations, and quantitative analysis.

Challenge existing economic frameworks and develop innovative approaches for understanding unprecedented technological transitions.

Contribute to broader research efforts focused on managing risks associated with advanced AI systems.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an innovative economist with strong research capabilities, experience analyzing complex economic systems, and the ability to think critically about uncertain future scenarios. They should be comfortable working independently, challenging traditional assumptions, and communicating advanced concepts clearly.

Advanced degree in Economics required, with a PhD preferred.

Expertise in labor economics, international economics, macroeconomics, or related fields.

Strong research record demonstrating original thinking and contributions to economic analysis.

Ability to adapt traditional economic models to analyze unprecedented technological disruptions.

Experience working with uncertainty, limited data, and emerging economic phenomena.

Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-specialist audiences.

Strong critical thinking skills and ability to evaluate competing economic theories.

Systems-thinking capability with an understanding of complex interdependencies between economic factors.

Familiarity with U.S. and European policy environments and international relations.

Self-directed research mindset with strong curiosity about AI’s potential systemic impacts.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with econometrics, quantitative research methods, or applied economic modeling.

Coding proficiency in Python, R, Rust, or similar programming languages for research and modeling.

Experience in policy organizations, government, multilateral institutions, or advisory environments.

Knowledge of systemic risk analysis, complex adaptive systems, or financial stability research.

Understanding of AI capabilities and their potential economic implications.

Experience with scenario planning, forecasting, or other strategic foresight methodologies.

Familiarity with political economy approaches related to power distribution and concentration.

Experience studying technological transitions, structural economic change, or behavioral responses to economic disruption.

Competitive annual salary range of $140,000 – $190,000 .
