Engineering Manager - Embedded Payment Software (M/F)

About the position

We are currently supporting our client, a major international player in urban mobility and payment solutions, in the recruitment of their future Embedded Software R&D Team Manager.

Our client's "Automatic Payments" division designs the payment software that equips parking meters and transport terminals worldwide. This is embedded engineering with a very concrete finish line: each software version is validated by an external certification which, once obtained, directly opens a new geographical market.

In this context, you will take charge of a team of seven engineers and QA specialists based in Besançon, specializing in writing payment applications that run directly within card readers.

As the global team has grown to 14 people under a single manager, our client has chosen to split it into two human-sized teams of 7 people. The goal is simple: to ensure that every employee receives the support and attention they deserve. You will therefore inherit a structured, competent team with rich expertise (some members have over 10 years of experience in the field) and a clear roadmap.

Terms:

Contract Type: CDI de projet (long-term project, potentially several years)

Location: Besançon area, position is essentially on-site

Salary: €48,000.00 to €65,000.00 Gross / year

Your missions

Working in tandem with another Engineering Manager and under the responsibility of the Head of Engineering, your missions will be divided into several key roles:

Management and the human element: Recruit, support, and grow your team of system and QA engineers. You will conduct individual interviews, set clear objectives, and notably help your Tech Lead develop their strategic dimension.

Guaranteeing deliveries: Assume responsibility for your team's commitments, from initial specification to final delivery accepted by certification laboratories. You will provide visibility to the business through realistic forecasting.

Maintaining quality standards: External certification imposes a very strict definition of what a "ready" product means. You will ensure that the team's readiness criteria are always explicit and up to date so that laboratory testing is merely a validation formality.

Technical credibility and decision-making: Without coding yourself on a daily basis, you must be able to read code. You will be the guarantor of critical technical trade-offs: knowing when to choose a quick fix to certify this quarter, or to impose a robust architecture choice for the next five years, while explaining these choices to non-technical stakeholders.

Relationship with external partners: Actively collaborate with payment terminal manufacturers (SDK management), approval laboratories, and payment card acquirers.

About you

What is indispensable to apply:

A manager's mindset above all: You have at least 5 years of experience in the human management of technical teams (recruitment, agile rituals, career management). What you love most is helping people grow and creating a healthy working environment.

Solid technical background in embedded software: You are able to understand issues regarding compilation chains, memory constraints, SDK integration, or low-level communication protocols (ideally coming from an initial background in C/C++ development).

Experience with certifications or regulatory standards

Languages: You are comfortable in English, both spoken and written.
