Prosthetics Clerk
This position is part of the Prosthetic Treatment Center (PTC) within the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service, located within the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). This healthcare system has an active outpatient treatment program and includes, but not limited to, Audiology & Speech Pathology, Visual Impairment Service Team, Spinal Cord Injury, Rehabilitation Medicine, Blind Rehabilitation Service, Medical Services, Surgical Service, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedic Services.
Major duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to: Determine the veteran's eligibility and entitlement for the prosthetic items. Select appropriate item from inventory, issue to veteran, select correct bar code label for item issued and provide consult to appropriate prosthetic clerk for posting to Veterans prosthetic record. Responsible for posting note to prosthetic CPRS consults regarding status of order and for closing the consult when appropriate. Determine when patient education is required and refer veteran to appropriate clinician for training. Evaluate to determine the most useful and appropriate information, resolves inconsistencies in available information or provide alternatives. Assist visitors and/or callers with the completion of forms or documents necessary to provide the prosthetic items. Research patient record information using CPRS, Appointment Scheduling, files and the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) computer system. Direct visitors and refers callers to appropriate staff member based on specific request or by ascertaining the nature of the call. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/28/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
- Thorough knowledge of Prosthetic/orthotic processes, rules and regulations on eligibility and entitlements;
- Receive and direct calls and visitors;
- Determine visitor's eligibility and entitlement for the medical items and or services;
- Assists visitors with the completion of forms or documents necessary to obtain medial items and or services;
- Utilizing complex technical computer systems of records to obtain patient medical information, appointment scheduling, determine medical benefits, etc.
OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have four full academic years of successfully completed education above the high school level.
OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. For GS-5 level positions only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
