Lead Transportation Coordinator
The Lead Transportation Coordinator (Beneficiary Travel Lead) works as part of the Beneficiary Travel (BT) section of the Veteran Transportation Service, Business Office (VTS) within the Amarillo VA Health Care System. The incumbent's main duties are to provide patient program support, program administration, administrative support, excellent customer service to all staff and veterans and perform other related duties as assigned.
Major duties
The Lead Transportation Coordinator (Beneficiary Travel Lead) helps guide the daily operation of the unit, ensures that agency policies and priorities are being followed; and provides input on work performance of the unit staff. The incumbent gives advice, counsel, and training support and guidance to employees on both work and administrative matters. The incumbent hears and resolves minor complaints from employees; refers group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to appropriate supervisor or manager. The incumbent participates in interview panels and resume reviews during the recruitment process for the Beneficiary Travel/Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) section; identifies and provides for training needs; and recommends to the supervisor, as a subject matter expert, ways to improve production or increase the quality of work within the area of authority. Provide information to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs. Serves as the subject matter expert and trainer for the Beneficiary Travel staff responsible for accurately determining and/or verifying Veteran eligibility for travel reimbursement according to rules, regulations and standard operating procedures. Conducts travel audits under the direction of the Compliance Business Integrity program. Arranges special mode transport for patients adhering to provider specifications of mode of transport and ensuring that mode is correctly denoted according to the patient's medical condition. Responsible for coordinating and/or writing replies to customer service and Congressional inquiries. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/07/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. GS-7 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of Beneficiary Travel regulations to check vouchers for compliance and accuracy; knowledge of Interfacility Transfer guidelines to ensure payment of ambulance bills; knowledge of the Beneficiary Travel Self Service System to provide instruction to claims processing staff, generate reports and investigation/audit claims; knowledge of Special Mode Transportation guidelines for tracking and processing claims for proper issuance of per diem, hotel, meals and lodging rates; and, knowledge of principles, methods, and tools of quality assurance and quality control used to ensure a product fulfills functional requirements and standards.
