Health Technician - Dodge City CBOC
Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is seeking to fill a full-time Health Technician position at the Dodge City, KS Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC)!
Major duties
Duties of this position includes but not limited to: Draws blood from clinic outpatients, assuring special drawing techniques and proper tubes are used and the correct amount of blond is drawn. Incumbent must be proficient in the area of phlebotomy and specimen collection. The incumbent will use the laboratory handbook as a reference. Verifies the patient as the individual denoted on lab orders and labels all tubes with patient's name, social security number, date and time to insure proper identification. Performs clinical administrative/clerical duties supporting the health care team in the treatment of patients. Is expected to be able to perform effectively in a clinic environment and utilize a computer to complete daily assignments. Resolves problems and complaints involving procedural issues on own initiative. Makes sound decisions independently, recognizes emergent situations and takes necessary action. Ensures all orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner while giving special consideration to all written orders of an emergent/urgent nature. Participates in clinic conferences by presenting information obtained through observations of patients' physical and emotional status. Observes, reports and records in correct format changes in patients' condition, i.e., vital signs, check dressing, patient's color and skin condition; determining of airway patency and/or need for suctioning and drainage from any tubes. Performs EKGs. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 0700-1530 Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/16/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can't be waived. The IOR for this position is specialized experience that required the knowledge, methods, and techniques of an outpatient health technician or successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: phlebotomy techniques and procedures, including the use of centrifuge and processing of lab specimens; cardiac monitoring using appropriate telemetry equipment such as EKG, cardiac monitors, and other diagnostic equipment; monitoring patient vital signs; recognizing, responding, and reporting signs and changes in cardiac rhythms; use of computers and other basic office equipment to enter patient data. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and post-high school education (beyond the second year).
