Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Supervisor
The position of the Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Supervisor is located in the Facilities Management Service at VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto Division. The position serves as foreman over the Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop exercising full supervisory responsibility for control over work operations.

Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not required Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Instructs, directs, trains, and plans the activities assigned personnel and administers personnel actions for subordinate employees. Performs frequent and periodic inspections of equipment whose maintenance and repair the HVAC Shop is responsible to perform. Ensures adequate stock of materials and equipment by inventorying and ordering those supplies necessary within the allocated HVAC budget. Schedules and approves annual leave of A/C & R Unit employees on an annual basis to accommodate seasonal workloads. Assigns priorities to tasks of subordinates verbally or in writing to ensure deadlines are met and keeps a tickler file of important dates/goals to accomplish this. Researches and gathers data on equipment and materials to prepare specifications for ordering supplies, equipment, and services required for the HVAC Shop. Responsible for inventory and security of assigned equipment on the Equipment Inventory List (EIL), and other non-accountable supplies. Initiates new and replacement personal property request, including justification information for the replacement. Prepares Performance Plans for subordinates and prepares annual Performance Appraisals. Interprets specifications, drawings, memos, catalogs, operating manuals, etc., for subordinates. Receives assignments both orally and in writing. Specific technical and administrative problems are discussed with supervisors concerning extensive and difficult assignments. Carries out other special assignments as delegated and performs any other related duties that may be assigned to the HVAC Shop. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements: Work requires good coordination and good physical condition. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl and work in uncomfortable positions and to pull, push, reach over the should and lift supplies and/or equipment weighing up 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Typically makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently for long periods of time. Must have rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, good hearing, depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Glasses are permitted. Working Conditions: Work is both outside and inside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness or chilling areas that have intermittent noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt, oils, with exposure to electrical wires and energy. Areas may be slippery and/or uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawls spaces, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical equipment closets. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
