Highways Maintenance Officer

We are currently seeking 3 experienced Highways Maintenance Officers to join a Local Authority in the East of England on an interim basis. This opportunity would suit a highways professional with extensive experience overseeing reactive highway maintenance activities, coordinating emergency responses, and ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of the highway network. The role will involve working closely with local communities, elected members, contractors, and internal stakeholders to deliver high-quality highway maintenance services.

Highways Maintenance Officer x3 Start: ASAP Duration: Until March 2027 Rate: Negotiable (Inside IR35) Location: East Anglia (minimum 4 days per week working from a depot) Hours: 37 hours per week, flexible between 7:00am and 7:00pm

Key Responsibilities: Inspect and monitor the highway network to identify defects and maintenance requirements Manage reactive highway maintenance activities and coordinate repairs through contractors Respond to highway incidents, including flooding, traffic collisions, vehicle fires, and other emergencies, ensuring the network remains safe Investigate reported highway defects and undertake site inspections in line with policies and procedures Order, programme, and oversee maintenance works through to completion Engage proactively with local communities, elected members, Parish and Town Councils, and other stakeholders Manage customer enquiries and reports through digital systems, ensuring issues are addressed promptly and effectively. Support the planning and delivery of maintenance programmes to minimise disruption and maximise value for money Requirements: Must meet the essential criteria outlined in the job description Minimum 5 years' experience working within Highways & Transport in a similar role Strong experience delivering reactive maintenance activities and coordinating emergency highway response. Qualified Highway Safety Inspector with a current, in-date certification Experience managing customer reports and enquiries via digital systems and inspecting defects in line with established policies and procedures. Strong understanding of working with and proactively managing relationships with elected members Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for site visits HND (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Highways, Construction, or a related discipline is desirable Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organisational skills
