Postdoc in multi-omics and machine learning
Do you want to work in one of the world's fastest-growing technology areas, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee relations and offers secure, beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a postdoc at Uppsala universitet.
The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with approximately 250 employees and over 900 people affiliated via Akademiska Sjukhuset. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in a variety of areas. More about the department's activities can be found at www.medsci.uu.se.
We are now seeking a driven researcher at the postdoctoral level for the research group for molecular precision medicine at the Department of Medical Sciences, located at Biomedicinskt Centrum (BMC).
The research group studies various diseases using large-scale genetic methods https://www.uu.se/en/department/medical-sciences/research/research-groups/molecular-precision-medicine. Through close collaboration with clinical researchers at Akademiska sjukhuset in Uppsala, our research group has access to unique sample collections and clinical patient information. Close cooperation with the national infrastructure for genomics (National Genomics Infrastructure, NGI) at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) provides the research group with access to next-generation sequencing technology: https://ngisweden.scilifelab.se/.
The current project focuses on the analysis of blood samples from children with leukemia, healthy controls, and in vitro cell models using various omics techniques. The overall goal is to take the step towards precision medicine within pediatric leukemia. We strive to identify circulating biomarkers that can distinguish high-risk patients from low-risk patients. With this strategy, we aim to be able to shorten chemotherapy treatment for low-risk patients, while simultaneously targeting the treatment more specifically towards the high-risk group. We will also conduct drug screenings for targeted therapies, where we test promising new drugs that are in preclinical and early clinical trials.
Funded by the transnational European Partnership for Personalised Medicine (EP PerMed), this project is a close collaboration with leading research groups in pediatric hematology at University of Freiburg and Technical University of Munich in Germany, as well as University of Tampere in Finland. As a postdoc in the project, you will play a key role in integrating and analyzing multi-omics data within the consortium to deepen the understanding of pediatric leukemia at a molecular level and contribute to the development of new treatment strategies.
You will be part of Uppsala universitets research group for molecular precision medicine, where research focuses on both the development of new genomics techniques and the application of these to clinically relevant questions within pediatric oncology.
Tasks
Analyze multi-omics data from pediatric leukemia samples and in vitro models, including genomics (WGS), transcriptomics (bulk and scRNA-seq), epigenomics (methylation arrays), and proteomics (Olink Explore PEA, Illumina SomaSeq) data. Develop and apply machine learning models to identify disease subtypes and predict treatment response. Collaborate with pediatric oncologists, bioinformaticians, and computational biologists, both within the research group and with our international partners. Author scientific articles and present the project's results at scientific meetings and conferences.
Qualification requirements
Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, or a related field, or a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree in one of these areas. The degree must be completed no later than the time of the employment decision. Primarily, candidates who have completed their degree at most three years ago should be considered. When calculating the three-year period, the starting point is the last application date. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, etc. Experience in large-scale data analysis and programming in relevant languages such as Python and R. Proficiency in handling large datasets in LINUX/UNIX environments. Experience with large-scale DNA or RNA sequencing. Experience in the analysis of proteomics data, including data from affinity-based proteomics analyses and/or mass spectrometry. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Good oral and written proficiency in English.
Desirable/merit
Experience in integrating multi-omics data. Competence in machine learning for biomedical applications.
