About the company

The Department of Geosciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geosciences. Here, there is a broad competence that contributes to solutions for important societal issues.

The Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development.

Our research unites natural science and technology with social science and is often interdisciplinary. At the department, over 300 people from more than 30 countries work, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.

Our six research departments

  • Geophysics
  • Air, water, and landscape studies
  • Mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics
  • Natural resources and sustainable development
  • Paleobiology
  • Wind energy

The program for air, water, and landscape studies, LUVAL, brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. See: LUVAL for more information about the program for air, water, and landscape studies.

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a difference in society. Our most important asset is all 7,500 employees and 53,000 students who, with curiosity and engagement, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces.

Your tasks

You will contribute to the EU project "CLOSER" with a focus on data compilation and attribution of extreme climate events and their effects, and will be active within the Swedish Centre for Extreme Climate Events (climes).

You will work with data collection on and analysis of the socio-economic effects of extreme climate events in the mid-latitudes. Different categories of events are of interest, such as heatwaves, cold snaps, wildfires, storms, and droughts. Different types of data may be used, including reanalysis data, remote sensing, climate models, disaster databases, and texts. The purpose is to link the physical events with exposure and the effects. Teaching may be included, up to a maximum of 20%. You will be placed at the Department of Geosciences in Uppsala, but are expected to travel both within and outside Sweden.

Requirements

Qualification requirements A doctoral degree in climate science, meteorology, disaster studies, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related disciplines, or a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree in the aforementioned subjects. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made. Primarily, those who have completed their degree at most three years ago should be considered. When calculating the three-year timeframe, the starting point is the last application date. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, etc.

Previous experience in one of the following areas is a requirement: effects of extreme weather, remote sensing data for extreme climate events, computational linguistics, or machine learning within disaster management.

You must also demonstrate the ability to communicate your research in a time-efficient manner through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals and have excellent skills in expressing yourself orally and in writing in English. You need to have good collaborative skills as the work involves collaboration with various international research circles and centers.

Desirable/other merits Experience in at least one of the following areas is a requirement; experience covering two or more of these areas is particularly meritorious: effects of extreme weather, remote sensing data for extreme climate events, computational linguistics, or machine learning for disaster management. These must be documented, e.g., through peer-reviewed publications. We also value high quality in publications in international journals with peer-review systems. It is meritorious if you are self-driven, take initiative, and drive your work forward. We would like to see that you enjoy developing and testing new ideas.
