Postdoc in computational chemistry and structure-based drug design
Do you want to work with drug development, supported by competent and pleasant colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee relations and offers secure, beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a position as a postdoc at Uppsala universitet.
The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is divided into seven research programs, all of which focus on different areas within cell and molecular biology: computational biology and bioinformatics, microbiology and immunology, molecular biology, molecular biophysics, molecular evolution, molecular systems biology, and structural biology. The scientific foundation of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, and physics. The department has over 200 employees with around 60 doctoral students. Please read more about the department's work at https://icm.uu.se.
The position will be located in Jens Carlsson's research group within the program for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. Jens Carlsson's research focuses on computational modeling of proteins with a particular focus on G-protein coupled receptors. Jens Carlsson's group uses modeling to understand how receptors function at the molecular level and develops methods to identify drug candidates, often in collaboration with experimental research groups. It is an international research team that is also part of Science for Life Laboratory (http://www.scilifelab.se/). More information about the group's research can be found on its website (www.carlssonlab.org).
Duties
The project is focused on studying how drugs bind to G-protein coupled receptors using computational models. The main goal of the project is to understand how small molecules affect receptors by studying them at the molecular level and using this knowledge to develop new strategies for drug development. The project also involves close collaborations with experimental research groups in pharmacology and structural biology.
Qualification requirements
A doctoral degree in computational chemistry or a foreign degree assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree in the same field. The degree must be completed no later than the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree no more than three years ago should be considered. When calculating the three-year period, the starting point is the last application date. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, etc.
Very good knowledge of computational chemistry with extensive experience in molecular dynamics simulations for G-protein coupled receptors is a requirement. The work requires good written and oral proficiency in English as the project is conducted in an international environment.
We place great importance on personal qualities such as good teamwork skills, motivation, and independence.
Other desirable/merit-based qualifications
Previous experience from the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is highly meritorious. Previous experience in modeling aminergic receptors, machine learning, and molecular docking is also meritorious.
About the employment
The employment is fixed-term for two years according to the central collective agreement. The scope is full-time. Start date 2027-02-01 or as agreed. Location: Uppsala
Information about the employment is provided by: Jens Carlsson, jens.carlsson@icm.uu.se, Tel: 072 227 7976.
Welcome with your application no later than October 5, 2026, UFV-PA 2026/2736.
