Research Engineer
The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala universitet has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among others, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the operations are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology and medical physics at Akademiska sjukhuset. The department has teaching assignments in a number of degree programs, independent courses and international master's programs within the medical faculty. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is approximately 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. The research engineer will also perform practical experimental work within our ongoing projects and take responsibility for establishing and conducting standard experiments in the group. Key responsibilities include:
- Organizing and maintaining the laboratory, including managing inventory, ordering reagents and consumables using inventory and order management software, and ensuring a clean and functional workspace.
- Performing support experiments such as genotyping, PCR, molecular cloning and maintenance of zebrafish lines.
- Assisting with zebrafish breeding and care in accordance with institutional and ethical guidelines.
- Contributing to the group's research projects on cardiovascular mechanosensation, including experimental design and data analysis, with co-authorship of the resulting publications.
- Generating and characterizing new zebrafish lines, including CRISPR-Cas9 knock-ins and transgenes through microinjection.
- Acquiring and quantifying confocal imaging data from zebrafish embryos.
- Collaborating closely with the group leader to ensure that laboratory activities run smoothly.
- Developing and driving an independent side project in agreement with the group leader.
Qualification requirements
- Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, biomedicine or equivalent laboratory experience.
- Proven organizational skills and the ability to manage laboratory operations effectively.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a collaborative and supportive attitude.
- Strong sense of responsibility and precision.
- Documented practical experience of experimental research, for example from a master's thesis project or a previous research position.
- Ability to plan and troubleshoot experiments independently, as well as to interpret and present resulting data.
- Good communication skills and fluent English, both oral and written.
Desired/merit qualifications
- Experience with zebrafish, including line maintenance, microinjection and CRISPR genome technology.
- Familiarity with molecular biology techniques such as PCR, cloning and genotyping.
- Previous training in Swedish legislation and ethics, animal welfare and the 3Rs, as well as laboratory animal science for zebrafish.
- Experience with laboratory ordering and inventory systems.
- Experience of fluorescence microscopy of living embryos and quantitative image analysis in Fiji/ImageJ.
