PhD position in microbiology

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University constitutes a broad international environment for research and teaching. At IMBIM, basic research is conducted in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumor biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology, and virology. We are seeking a highly motivated person with a great interest in pursuing a PhD in medical microbiology. The expected start date is autumn 2026 or by agreement.

Project Summary

The research groups that the candidate will join focus on mechanisms for plasmid copy variation in bacteria, with a strong focus on infection biology and the evolution of antibiotic resistance. Plasmids play a central role in the spread of antimicrobial resistance between different bacterial species and environments. The project aims to determine how variations in plasmid copy number affect resistance development and horizontal gene transfer. To achieve these goals, the successful candidate will have access to a large collection of genetically well-characterized microorganisms, advanced methods, and an interactive and stimulating work environment.

Duties

The main task for a doctoral student is to devote themselves to their doctoral training, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral training courses. The duties may also include teaching and other departmental work, however, a maximum of 20% of the working time.

Qualification Requirements

Eligible for education at the doctoral level is the person who has

obtained a degree at an advanced level with a focus on genetics, microbiology, evolutionary biology, or a related field or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or in some other way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

We are looking for a candidate with laboratory experience in cell and molecular biology and microbiology. Experience in bacterial genetics is a requirement. Very good oral and written communication skills in English are required. The candidate's personal qualities, such as collaboration and communication skills as well as analytical ability, will be considered. The candidate is expected to take their own initiative as well as to collaborate with national and international colleagues both within and outside the group.

Other Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications

Experience in bioinformatics and statistics is highly meritorious.
