The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the subject of chemistry. The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, very successful research of high international class is conducted. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often involving international collaboration, and we see continued good growth within our subject area. The department has educational mandates within engineering and civil engineering programs as well as master's programs. More information can be found on our website. www.uu.se/institution/kemi-angstrom

The Structural Chemistry program at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström has for many years had an activity focused on the development of materials and applications within the battery field: Ångström Advanced Battery Center. We develop new electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, improve the materials with respect to battery performance, and study fundamental chemical properties in batteries using both experimental and theoretical methods. The research is therefore both fundamental and applied.

Tasks We are seeking a motivated and ambitious PhD student to develop semi-solid electrolytes and characterize their application and performance in lithium-ion batteries. The project includes the formulation of electrolytes as well as the construction and testing of batteries. The PhD projects will involve extensive work within characterization methods such as electrochemistry, spectroscopy, microscopy, and structural characterization.

The PhD student will design, plan, and carry out the experimental work, often in collaboration with colleagues, critically analyze and discuss the results, and disseminate the work orally at scientific conferences and in writing in the form of articles in peer-reviewed journals and the doctoral thesis. The doctoral studies also involve courses and potentially teaching or other departmental duties to some extent.

Qualification requirements Eligible for education at the doctoral level is the person who has:

  • completed a degree at an advanced level in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, or materials science, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level (of which 15 higher education credits constitute independent work), with content that is relevant to the doctoral education or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country, knowledge that mainly corresponds to the above

The applicant must further have:

  • very good knowledge of English, both oral and written.
  • be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently and as part of a large team.
  • knowledge of and experience with electrochemical processes and characterization of battery materials

Great importance will also be placed on personal qualities such as good teamwork skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education.

Other desirable/merit qualifications It is desirable that the applicant has educational or research experience in batteries, electrolytes, and/or polymers.

About the employment The employment is time-limited, according to HF Chapter 5 § 7. The scope is full-time. Commencement 2027-01-04 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
