The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala universitet has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. One of the fundamental ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thus a closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, as well as vascular biology.

Tasks

The advertised PhD project will investigate the importance of the complement system, a part of the innate immune system, for endothelial cell and blood vessel development and function. The project will investigate endothelial cell-specific expression of complement factors and its importance for endothelial cell activation and blood clot formation. The project involves work with advanced cell models and vascular organoids, as well as analytical methods such as flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The group's work is translational, and there is an opportunity to verify experimental findings in clinical material.

The candidate is expected to independently drive the project together with other members of the research group as well as with national and international colleagues and partners. The tasks may also include teaching and other departmental work, however a maximum of 20% of the working time.

Qualification requirements

Eligible for education at the doctoral level is the person who has

  • completed a degree at an advanced level in immunology or another relevant subject area, or
  • completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or
  • in some other way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with documented practical and theoretical experience in molecular biology research regarding the complement system and the innate immune system. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a prerequisite for the position as the research is conducted in an international environment. The ability to work both independently and in a group is a requirement, and great importance will be placed on personal qualities.
