About the company

(statistics & dynamics) Do you want to work with research on the statistics and dynamics of multivariate extreme weather events, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee relations and offers secure, beneficial working conditions? Welcome to apply for a PhD position at Uppsala University. The Department of Geosciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geosciences. Here, there is a broad range of expertise contributing to solutions for important societal issues. The Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research unites natural science and technology with social science and is often interdisciplinary. At the department, over 300 people from more than 30 countries work, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research departments: Geophysics • Air, water and landscape studies • Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics • Natural resources and sustainable development • Paleobiology • Wind energy For more information see: www.uu.se/geovetenskaper The program for air, water and landscape studies, LUVAL, brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis and physical geography. See: LUVAL for more information about the program for air, water and landscape studies. You will work within the ERC project ”Dynamics, predictability and trends of multivariate extreme weather events” (DYCLEX). Job Duties The project focuses on quantitative analyses of multivariate extreme weather events in the mid-latitudes, in both current and future climates. In your work, you will work on linking atmospheric dynamics and circulation patterns to the occurrence of different multivariate extreme events, as well as using this understanding to investigate the predictability and long-term trends of the events. There is an opportunity to work with teaching and supervision up to 20%. You will be placed at the Department of Geosciences in Uppsala, but are expected to travel both within and outside Sweden. Qualification Requirements Eligible for education at the doctoral level is the person who has: Completed a degree at an advanced level in climate science, meteorology, statistics, physics or a related subject, or Completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits within the aforementioned subjects, or Otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

Requirements

These requirements must be met upon admission to the doctoral program, but not at the time of application. We are looking for someone who is driven, works independently, and is proactive. You need to be able to demonstrate solid knowledge in programming for data analysis and have excellent skills in expressing yourself orally and in writing in English. We also require good collaborative skills as the work involves collaborations with various research groups internationally. Other Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications An understanding of atmospheric dynamics, a strong knowledge base in applied statistics, and previous experience with the analysis of large amounts of climate data or physical processes that cause extreme weather is an advantage. We also value relevant experience outside the academic sector. Regulations for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) Chapter 5, Sections 1-7, as well as in the university's rules and guidelines. About the Employment The employment is time-limited, according to HF Chapter 5, Section 7. The scope is full-time. Commencement 2027-02-01 or as agreed.
