Uppsala universitet is a broad research university with a strong international position. The mission is to conduct research and education of the highest quality and to collaborate with society in various ways. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala universitet one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala universitet has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees, and a turnover of 6.7 billion SEK.

Uppsala universitet hereby announces the following: PhD student in condensed matter theory at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Start date: April 2019. Research division: Material theory.

Project description: We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student in condensed matter theory for a project within multiband and odd-frequency superconductivity. Odd-frequency superconductivity is a very unique superconducting state where the amplitude is odd in the time variable, or equivalent frequency domain, which is completely opposite to the usual behavior of superconductivity. The overall goal of the PhD project is to find new odd-frequency superconducting states, primarily in superconductors with several active low-energy bands or orbitals, as well as to find measurable signatures of this state. Examples of systems range from iron-based high-temperature superconductors to nano- and hybrid systems. The project involves both analytical work with advanced many-body methods and large numerical calculations. The PhD project is part of a larger project focusing on new materials and mechanisms for odd-frequency superconductivity funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Research environment: The Department of Material theory at Uppsala universitet offers a world-class environment for material theory research, with research ranging from strongly correlated and topological matter to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of many different types of functional materials. The department currently has approximately 90 active researchers, of whom about one third are PhD students. The PhD project belongs to a research group led by Professor Annica Black-Schaffer and currently consists of ten PhD students and postdocs. More information can be found on the group's website: http://materials-theory.physics.uu.se/blackschaffer.

Employment: The PhD employment is time-limited to four years of full-time studies. The holder shall primarily devote themselves to their own research training, i.e., research and coursework. Other duties at the department concerning teaching and administrative work may be included within the framework of the employment (max 20%), which extends the employment by the corresponding time. More information can be found on the department's website www.physics.uu.se.

Application procedure: The applicant should have a master's or civil engineer degree in physics, but a strong background in condensed matter theory or many-body theory. Experience with superconductivity is advantageous but not necessary. Very good knowledge of English, both oral and written, is a requirement. The application shall include a personal letter describing the applicant's scientific interests and motivation to become a PhD student. The application shall also include a CV and copies of relevant grades. Please also attach a copy of a master's thesis (completed or draft). Two letters of recommendation must also be included in the application, or sent directly by the writer to annica.black-schaffer@physics.uu.se with the subject line “Letter of Recommendation, Ph.D. Position 2019”.

Regulations for PhD students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) Chapter 5 Sections 1-7 as well as in the university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/.

Uppsala universitet values the qualities that equal gender distribution and diversity bring to the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of all genders and with different backgrounds, abilities, and life experiences. Uppsala universitet strives for a more even gender distribution among its employees and therefore female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

Salary: According to local agreement (Local collective agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants).

Commencement: 2019-04-01, time-limited employment until 2023-03-31.

Extent of employment: 100 %

Information regarding the employment is provided by: Annica Black-Schaffer, tel: 076-795 0649, email: annica.black-schaffer@physics.uu.se

Welcome with your application no later than January 25, 2019, UFV-PA 2018/4405.
