The Department of Chemistry – Ångström conducts research and education in the subject of chemistry. The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, very successful research of high international class is conducted. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international collaboration, and we see continued good growth within our subject area. The department has an educational mandate within engineering and civil engineering programs as well as master's programs. More information can be found on our website.  Project Description Within the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, we develop tomorrow's batteries, with the aim of making them more energy-dense and more resource-sustainable. Some examples of strategies to achieve this are moving towards sodium batteries, batteries with solid materials as electrolytes, and batteries built without bulky anode material – a so-called "anode-free" construction. In a larger research project together with National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, we will develop and study anode-free sodium batteries based on polymer electrolytes. We are therefore seeking a PhD student who can participate in Uppsala University's part of the project. Tasks  The work includes experimental activities in polymer science, materials chemistry, electrochemistry, and spectroscopy. Both material development as well as building battery cells, electrochemical testing, and spectroscopic material analysis (preferably XPS) will be relevant. The work takes place in close international collaboration and it may therefore also involve both shorter and longer research stays with the Taiwanese project partner. The tasks may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however, a maximum of 20% of the working time. Qualification Requirements  Eligible for education at the doctoral level is the person who has: completed a degree at an advanced level in chemistry, physics, or materials science, or  completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at an advanced level (of which 15 higher education credits constitute independent work), with content that is relevant to the doctoral education, or  in some other way, acquired within or outside the country, knowledge that mainly corresponds to the above.

The applicant must further have:  very good knowledge of English, both oral and written.

Great importance will also be placed on personal qualities such as good ability to cooperate, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education. Other Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications Experience in the manufacturing and electrochemical characterization of batteries, advanced material analysis (especially electron spectroscopy), polymeric materials, and polymer electrolytes. About the Employment  The employment is time-limited, according to HF Chapter 5, Section 7. The scope is full-time. Start date 2027-01-11 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala  Provisions for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Sections 1-7, as well as in the university's rules and guidelines.
