Video: https://youtu.be/M5n6RnScNgA PhD Fellow in topological data analysis At the Department of Mathematics, a position is vacant for a ph.d. fellow in topological data analysis. The position is for a period of three years, with the possibility of a fourth year consisting of career-advancing work (for example, teaching at the department). The position is funded by the University of Bergen (UiB) as a contribution to the Lie-Størmer-senteret. The position is linked to the work package WP4 – Topology, Algebra, and Geometry for Complex Data Analysis at the center. Lie-Størmer-senteret is a collaboration between UiT The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) and the University of Bergen (UiB). The center will employ ph.d. fellows who will research the interplay between algebra, differential geometry, analysis, and computational mathematics, and the use of these fields within data science and computational dynamics. About the project/tasks The ph.d. project is part of WP4 – Topology, Algebra, and Geometry for Complex Data Analysis at Lie-Størmer-senteret. It shall develop mathematical and computational methods within topological data analysis, with particular emphasis on multiparameter persistence and application to medical data. The project shall combine theoretical work with multiparameter persistence with the development and implementation of algorithms for medical image analysis. The person appointed shall investigate computational complexity, stability, and numerical summaries of multiparameter persistence and the use of these methods in medical image analysis. The fellow shall also participate actively in the research environment at Lie-Størmer-senteret and the research school Mathesis. Lie-Størmer-senteret shall build bridges between pure and computational mathematics, between mathematical research environments in Tromsø, Bergen, and the rest of Norway, and between research and education in the ERCOM network of European mathematical research centers. Qualifications and properties Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent education in mathematics. Master's students may apply if they complete their final master's examination by December 31, 2026. It is a prerequisite for employment that the master's degree is obtained. Background in algebraic topology and topological data analysis is a requirement. Experience with scientific programming or algorithm development is an advantage. Applicants must be able to work independently and structured and have good collaborative skills. Applicants must have good written and oral English skills. Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions, and potential will also count when assessing candidates.

Specific requirements for the position UiB is subject to export control regulations, and these regulations apply when processing applications for the position. The following apply to the position: About the fellowship position: The fellowship period is three years, with the possibility of a fourth year depending on the candidate's qualifications and the department's need for teaching, to be decided by the head of the department upon appointment. If a fourth year is decided, one year's worth of work consisting of career-advancing work related to teaching, dissemination, and research infrastructure/services will be distributed over the total employment period, thus corresponding to 25% of the time each year. About the research education: As a ph.d. fellow, you will participate in an approved educational program for a ph.d. degree within a timeframe of three years. The deadline to apply for admission to the ph.d. program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is two months after commencement of the position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the ph.d. degree. It is a prerequisite that you meet the requirements for admission to ph.d. studies at the University of Bergen.
