PhD Fellow

At the Geofysisk Institutt, there is a vacant position as a ph.d.-stipendiat in data-driven computational mechanics for offshore wind energy. The position is for a period of three years and covers a large part of the activities at Bergen Offshore Wind Centre (BOW), where the focus is on synthesizing fundamental and applied research within offshore wind power. The position is funded by the EU and is linked to the project ERC Consolidator Grant Data-Driven Approaches in Computational Mechanics for the Aerohydroelastic Analysis of Offshore Wind Turbines - DATA-DRIVEN OFFSHORE (Grant agreement ID: 101083157).

About the project/tasks:

Offshore wind power is crucial to achieving the goals of The European Green Deal. Although offshore wind power is a field that has grown and matured, the technology requires a paradigm shift to ensure sustainable development in the coming years. One way to achieve this paradigm shift is focused on the development of data-driven computational mechanics. The research activities related to this position follow the development of mathematical methods and numerical procedures for data-driven computational mechanics that will later be used for aerohydroelastic analysis of offshore wind turbines. This new approach allows for the inclusion of experimental data in the simulation of the system. The standard equations must be adjusted so that turbine loads, boundary conditions, and material models can be replaced through experimental data. The research related to the position also aims to have close collaboration with research environments within BOW and GFI. It is expected that the results of this research will be published in high-ranking journals.

Qualifications and attributes:

Applicants must have obtained a master's degree or equivalent education in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics, or have submitted the master's thesis before the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the master's degree is obtained before employment can take place.

  • Programming skills, for example Fortran or C++, are a requirement.
  • Competence in the theory of the finite-element method is an advantage.
  • Competence in the theory of numerical optimization is an advantage.
  • Experience from or competence in high-performance computing is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and structured and have good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must have excellent written and oral English skills.
  • Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized. Ambition and potential will also count when assessing candidates.

For the position applies the following:

Specific requirements for the position: UiB is subject to export control regulations, and these regulations apply when processing applications for the position.

About the position as a ph.d.-stipendiat

The stipend period is three years, with the possibility of a fourth year depending on the candidate's qualifications and the institute's need for teaching, and is decided by the head of the institute upon employment. If a fourth year is decided, one year's work consisting of career-advancing work related to teaching, dissemination, and research infrastructure/services, will be distributed over the total employment period and thus correspond to 25% of the time each year.

If you have previously been employed in a recruitment position (stipendiat, scientific assistant, or similar), a deduction may be made from the employment period.

About the research education

As a ph.d. stipendiat, you will participate in an approved education program for a ph.d. degree within a timeframe of 3 years. The deadline to apply for admission to the ph.d. program at the Fakultet for naturvitenskap og teknologi is two months after commencement of the position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the ph.d. degree. It is a prerequisite that you meet the requirements for admission to ph.d. studies at the Universitetet i Bergen.

We offer:

  • a good and academically stimulating work environment
  • salary as a stipendiat (code 1017) in accordance with the state salary scale. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 593,700. Further progression occurs according to seniority in the position.
  • membership in Statens pensjonskasse
  • good welfare schemes

The application must include:

  • a short statement about research interests and the motivation for applying for the position
  • a detailed justification of your qualifications in relation to the listed requirements, and how you meet each criterion. Additionally, you should address the mentioned "advantages", as these will be assessed during the ranking of candidates.
  • name and contact information for two references. One of these should be the main supervisor from the master's thesis or equivalent task.
  • CV
  • transcripts and diplomas for bachelor's and master's degrees. If you have not yet completed the master's degree, you must provide confirmation that the master's thesis has been submitted.
  • relevant certificates
  • approved documentation that you meet the requirements for English proficiency (if required, cf. Requirements for English proficiency for admission to the ph.d. program).
  • any list of scientific work (publication list with links).

Application and attachments with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded in JobNorge.
