At the Matematisk institutt, a position is available as a postdoc in physics-informed machine learning for offshore wind.

The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years and is linked to a Horizon Europe project where the University of Bergen is a partner.

About the project/tasks

The project brings together a consortium of 9 partners from 6 different countries in the EU/EEA. The goal is to develop appropriate and feasible solutions for offshore wind turbines that can strengthen structural health monitoring, real-time reliability assessment, and decision support for predictive maintenance through integrated sensor, modeling, and digital frameworks.

The position offers particularly good opportunities for collaboration with leading experts in offshore wind, participation in international conferences and project meetings, as well as working in an interdisciplinary research environment. The position involves research stays and joint activities as needed, funded through the project. Expected start is January 1, 2027.

The overall goal of the position is to strengthen the link between fundamental research and applied research, in line with the strategy of the MEGA group led by førsteamanuensis Yan Li.

Your main tasks will be to:

  • develop new and conduct a literature review on data-driven surrogate models for real-time reconstruction and forward simulations
  • develop numerical algorithms for physical reconstruction based on sparse data
  • implement assimilation methods that integrate physics-based and surrogate-based models
  • collaborate with project groups and participate in project activities
  • prepare project deliverables

Qualifications and properties

  • Applicants must have obtained a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (ph.d.) in marine engineering, applied mechanics, physics, computer science, or similar fields, or have submitted their doctoral thesis for evaluation before the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the doctoral degree is obtained before employment can take place.
  • Documented high-quality scientific publications within relevant topics is a requirement
  • Documented experience with research activities relevant to the position is an advantage
  • Previous research with a strong interdisciplinary profile is an advantage
  • Applicants must be able to work independently, structured, and have good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must have good English skills, both written and oral.

Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions, and potential will also count when assessing candidates.
