Contractual Assistant Professor (M/F) AI for Robotics
Teaching Mission The recruited person will ensure a teaching load of 64 hours equivalent to tutorials (TD) per year in order to strengthen pedagogical activities in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence for autonomous robotics (for example AI and robotic perception, AI for planning and decision, control and AI, human-robot interaction…). They will contribute to existing courses and may develop new ones. Teaching activities will primarily target Master's level programs, in synergy with the new ERASMUS MUNDUS European Master in Sustainable Systems Engineering program (UTC, University of Genoa, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and Technical University of Tirana). The recruited person will also have the opportunity to contribute to the computer engineering curriculum of UTC, for both initial training students and those in work-study programs. Research Mission The recruited person will join the Heudiasyc laboratory. This position is part of the CAP (Collaboration Acceleration Program) TWINNING, "TrustWorthy Interactive augmeNted autoNomous driving", linked to the PostGenAI@Paris project led by Sorbonne Université.
The project focuses on co-driving between a driver and a vehicle whose autonomous navigation, based on machine learning, is supervised by an integrity controller. Autonomous navigation on open roads remains a challenge due to the uncertain and uncontrolled nature of the environment, multiple interactions with other road users, and limits in understanding situations, which restricts the autonomous decision-making capabilities of vehicles. Our objective is to increase the driver's collaborative skills through high-performance perception, decision, and control functionalities, based on reliable and trustworthy AI models.
The recruited person will join the Heudiasyc laboratory and work on the CAP Twinning project, contributing to one or more of its three main scientific axes related to embedded AI and automatic control: Reliable scene understanding: Management and propagation of uncertainties in perception functionalities.
Environment monitoring and study of compliance with the Operational Design Domain (ODD).
Planning and decision-making in uncertain environments: AI-based methods.
Reactive planning taking into account traffic rules and regulations.
Prediction and anticipation capabilities in a highly dynamic context.
Model- and data-based human/vehicle shared control: Mechanisms promoting driver trust; estimation of trust metrics, cognitive load, and human attention.
Augmented and adaptive multimodal human-machine interfaces (haptic, sound, etc.).
Cooperative and shared control.
Research will be tested and validated using simulation tools, virtual reality platforms, and experimental vehicles. The recruited person will be involved in the partnership and the development strategy of the project. This program is multidisciplinary and combines research in artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented reality, human-machine interfaces (acoustic and haptic), and cognitive psychology. Additional Information Additional activities Participate in the implementation of the Sustainable Development & Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility - DD&RSE master plan. The Institution The Université de technologie de Compiègne (UTC), a member of the Sorbonne Université Alliance (ASU) and the network of technology universities, is among the top engineering schools in many national rankings and offers a privileged setting for teaching and research. www.utc.fr The Department Among the 6 departments of UTC, the Computer Engineering (GI) department provides teaching:
- in the core curriculum (integrated preparatory cycle),
- in the branch (engineering cycle: training under student and apprentice status, continuing education)
- in the 3rd cycle (master and doctorate).
It hosts the LMAC and Heudiasyc laboratories. It maintains strong relationships with industry in both training and research. It cultivates close links with national and international institutions. https://www.utc.fr/formations/diplome-dingenieur/genie-informatique-gi/ The Laboratory Heudiasyc (UMR 7253) is a joint research unit combining UTC and CNRS created in 1981. It conducts multidisciplinary research centered on computer science, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and automatic control. Heudiasyc's activities are based on the synergy between upstream research and technological research, to meet the major challenges of society in the field of information sciences, and this in close collaboration with professional partners, particularly industrial ones. Several platforms and demonstrators, developed within the laboratory, illustrate this desire to confront research with the complexity of applications. https://www.hds.utc.fr/recherche/plateformes-technologiques/ Contract type and provisional recruitment date Fixed-term contract - planned duration of 2 to 3 years, possible extension - to be filled in early 2027 Gross monthly salary From €2,590 to €5,000 depending on experience and funding Application dates From 29/07/2026 to 30/09/2026 Contacts Véronique Cherfaoui, professor at UTC, veronique.cherfaoui@hds.utc.fr Reine Talj, research director at CNRS, reine.talj@hds.utc.fr co-leads of the "TrustWorthy Interactive augmeNted autoNomous driving" project of the PostGenAI@Paris consortium
