Biological Science Technician (Wildlife / Motor Vehicle Operator)
About the Position: The position is located at the US Army Installation Management Command, Directorate of Public Works (DPW), Fort Benning, GA. Fort Benning is located 100 miles south of Atlanta, GA, and adjacent to Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL. The geography and climate are ideal for year round military training. Major duties
- Provide technical support to the Natural Resources Management Branch and the threatened and endangered species.
- Independently plan, conduct, and lead various field studies of threatened and/or endangered species to determine numbers, ecosystem monitoring/management.
- Develop and/or implement work plans to collect required data.
- Provide detailed reports on work methods, data collected and/or project evaluation.
- Participate in fire management activities including controlled burning, prescribed burning for endangered species and/or fire suppression.

GS-04: General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with technician Biological Science (Wildlife) responsibilities AND six months of specialized experience which includes assisting in support duties related to threatened and endangered wildlife and plants and associated habitats. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting limited field studies of sensitive plant and wildlife species; collecting data of habitat or species under the directions of supervisor or higher level technicians. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-06: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting and conducting field studies of sensitive plant and wildlife species; collecting data of habitat or species; and assisting and searching activity or control program work under the directions of supervisor or higher level technicians. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Biology, Chemistry, Entomology, Animal Husbandry, Botany, Physics, or Agriculture. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing various observations, data collection, and conservation duties for protected species and their habitat; conducting a variety of field studies of threatened and endangered species under the directions of supervisor or higher level technicians. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Biology, Chemistry, Entomology, Animal Husbandry, Botany, Physics, or Agriculture . (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing various observation, data collection, and conservation duties for protected species and their habitat; conducting a variety of field studies of threatened and endangered species; participating in wildfire suppression activities.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Biology, Chemistry, Entomology, Animal Husbandry, Botany, Physics, or Agriculture. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
