Professor in Environmental Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is now seeking a professor in environmental chemistry who can contribute new expertise, new methods, and new perspectives, and who complements and strengthens the existing research environment. The appointment as professor is permanent and shall be filled no later than June 2027 (or by agreement). A generous start package is included.

Background

Environmental chemistry at the Department of Chemistry is an internationally recognized research environment with both fundamental and applied research. Research areas include anthropogenic organic and organometallic pollutants, sustainable chemicals, and techniques to reduce environmental impact. The department has advanced research infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories and mass spectrometry for trace analysis (https://www.umu.se/forskning/infrastruktur/tap/). Researchers also have access to analytical platforms at KBC https://www.umu.se/kemiskt-biologiskt-centrum/), field resources at Umeå marine research center, Krycklan and CIRC (https://www.arcticcirc.net/), as well as computing resources via HPC2N (https://www.hpc2n.umu.se). National infrastructures such as MAX IV, NMR for Life, NAISS and SITES are easily accessible.

Duties

The professor is expected to lead the department's research in environmental chemistry as well as conduct environmental chemistry research at the forefront of the research area. Furthermore, the professor is expected to attract research funding for their own research as well as for larger and interdisciplinary projects. The professor is expected to contribute to teaching at various levels, including undergraduate and doctoral levels. The professor is expected to develop research and teaching in line with the international development of the field as well as societal needs. Administrative and supervisory tasks at the department are included in the duties. Knowledge of the Swedish language is not a selection criterion, but the selected candidate is expected, through a university-sponsored course, to learn Swedish within the first three years of employment.

Eligibility requirements

Those who have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical skill are eligible to be employed as a professor (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance). Scientific skill refers to independent research efforts, the ability to plan and lead research, and the ability to communicate research with the surrounding society. Pedagogical skill refers to documented experience in planning, implementation, examination, and evaluation of teaching, as well as demonstrating a reflective approach to student learning and the teacher role.

Applicants must have experience in at least one of the following areas:

Characterization of pollution sources, Transport, fate, and effects of anthropogenic pollutants, Environmental analytical chemistry, Exposome research, including metabolomics, Techniques to reduce environmental pollution.

Very good knowledge of English is required.

Assessment criteria and their weighting

As assessment criteria for the appointment of a professor, the degree of such skill that is a requirement for eligibility for employment shall apply. The assessment of pedagogical skill shall be given equal care as the assessment of scientific skill.

As an assessment criterion for the appointment, the degree of scientific skill shall primarily apply. Secondly, the degree of pedagogical skill shall be considered. Furthermore, leadership ability, administrative skill, collaboration with the surrounding society, and other skills of importance with regard to the subject matter of the appointment and the duties to be included in the appointment shall be considered.
