About the position At the Department of Building, Energy and Materials (IBEM), a permanent, 100% position is available as either Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, or University Lecturer within the field of water and wastewater technology (VA) and civil engineering. The position is affiliated with the research group BEaM (Building, Energy and Materials). The core activities of the department are education, research, and dissemination within building-related engineering disciplines. The department's overall objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of the region and the northern areas. The department provides engineering expertise to the building and construction industry at national and international levels, with a strong connection to the business community in the region. The department is located in Narvik, but currently offers decentralized engineering education in both Alta and Tromsø, as well as online education. The department has approximately 400 students distributed across bachelor's and master's programs.
The department offers, among other things:
- professional education at master's and bachelor's levels
- flexible qualification schemes for admission to engineering education
- Ph.D. education within building and energy disciplines
- research projects
- commercial laboratory services and contract research for the industry. Some examples include material testing and classification, thermography and airtightness testing of buildings, acoustic measurements, and indoor climate investigations
- continuing education courses
- facilitation and arrangement of professional courses, seminars, and conferences
The research group BEaM (Building, Energy and Materials) works with sustainable solutions within building and energy technology. The research group has a significant portfolio of ongoing research projects together with national and international partners.

Work and research area This position is academically linked to the studies: Bachelor Building, engineer and Master Building and environment, civil engineer (study direction VA-technology) and civil engineering.
The position shall mainly contribute to covering teaching and supervision, as well as participation in R&D activities within practical VA-technology.
If the position is not fully filled with teaching, supervision, and R&D activities, work towards external entities through UiT's BA-center north must be anticipated, with a focus on developing industry-oriented research in collaboration with the industry.
The Competence Center for the building and construction industry in the north shall contribute to ensuring that the study offerings at UiT The Arctic University of Norway are adapted to the needs of the industry. This includes both the ordinary study offerings and those that should be offered within continuing and further education.
The BA-center shall also contribute to ensuring necessary competence and capacity for research on both the center's side and in the industry.
The center's tasks are:
- Ensuring industry relevance in study offerings and R&D.
- Participating in the development of new subjects and continuing education (EVU) courses.
- Contact with business clusters, individual companies, and administration.
- Follow-up of external project portfolios.
- Collaboration with other professional environments.
The following sub-areas are of special interest:
- planning and construction of the technical components in VA-systems
- engineering and design of the technical elements in VA-systems
- operation and maintenance of VA-facilities
- overview of laws and regulations within VA-technology, including especially the Drinking Water Regulations and the Pollution Regulations
The person employed must also expect to undertake tasks related to the implementation of bachelor's and master's theses, as well as active participation in the department's other activities. The person employed will be responsible for ensuring that this is carried out in accordance with the university's current guidelines at all times.
IBEM has close cooperation with the building and construction industry locally and nationally. The cooperation shall be further developed and maintained so that the study is relevant and can meet the needs of the building industry. It is expected that the person employed contributes to this work.
The position includes the right and duty to conduct R&D work (depending on the position category) in accordance with what is common at universities in Norway. R&D work at the department is mainly organized into separate R&D groups. The person employed will be affiliated with a relevant research group, based on the field of study and interests as well as the department's R&D strategy.

Qualifications You must qualify for a position as Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, or University Lecturer within the field of water and wastewater technology in accordance with the requirements set out in the Regulations to the University and College Act (the University and College Regulations).
To meet the qualification requirements for this position, at least the following is required:
- For the position of Associate Professor: A PhD or equivalent in water and wastewater technology.
- For the position of Senior Lecturer or University Lecturer: A Master's degree or equivalent in water and wastewater technology.
- For the position of Senior Lecturer, contributions to professional development work at a high level are also required, in accordance with international or national standards within the field/profession.
- Relevant professional or teaching experience from a university/college.
- Work experience from a municipality, contractor, or consulting firm within the building and construction industry.
- Competence and experience within the field of water and wastewater technology. The following sub-areas are of special interest: Planning of VA-systems, Engineering of VA-systems, Operation and maintenance of VA-facilities.

The language of instruction is Norwegian, and the applicant must master/have a proficiency level in Norwegian equivalent to a native speaker. You must document skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian language at a minimum level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Good knowledge of English, both oral and written. Associate Professors are paid according to the state regulation code 1011 with a gross annual salary in a 100% position between NOK 645,000 - 915,000. Senior Lecturers are paid according to the state regulation code 1198 with a gross annual salary in a 100% position between NOK 645,000 - 915,000. University Lecturers are paid according to the state regulation code 1009 with a gross annual salary in a 100% position between NOK 560,000 - 890,000. In special cases, higher salary may be considered. From the gross salary, a 2% mandatory contribution to Statens pensjonskasse is deducted.
At UiT, the distribution of working time is flexible and assigned on an individual basis. As a norm, Associate Professors will use up to 50% of their time for R&D work and 50% for teaching, Senior Lecturers up to 30% of their working time for R&D work and 70% for teaching, and University Lecturers up to 20% of their time for R&D work and 80% for teaching, after time for other tasks has been deducted. As a norm, 5% is allocated to administrative tasks.

The committee's mandate is to conduct an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the application documents and the announcement text.
