Major duties

Performs a variety of tasks in handling, marking, and preparing display of merchandise for selection by customers. Observes, counts and maintains stock level on shelves. Lists items needed. Refills stock on shelves and display counters, matching brands, codes, numbers or sizes of items on shelves or counters to list. Checks quantities of items received and sets aside those which are of unacceptable quality. Marks items with proper selling prices. Moves old stock toward front of shelf or rotating stamped code date. Assist in inventories by counting stock on hand. Answers customers' questions concerning where items are displayed in the store or obtains items for customer from the backup storage areas, as requested. Provides Worls Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts high-level supervisor or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occuaptional illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment. Performs other related duties as assigned. EMERGENCY ESSENTIAL ¿ BUSINESS OPERATIONS This position is emergency essential. May be required to work when the rest of the Base is closed.

Qualifications

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the various types, sizes, and locations of stocked items and how items should be properly displayed. Knowledge of the general characteristics of items handled to recognize obvious poor or unacceptable quality and to identify items by type, kind, or variety for pricing purposes. Uses judgment to compare the names and sizes of items on shelves, counters, and in storage areas with order lists and price lists to locate and identify stock. Must remain alert to and report obvious shortages, damage, spoilage, or other unacceptable conditions involving incoming or stored items. RESPONSIBILITY: The supervisor provides instructions regarding the assigned work area and duties to be performed. Carries out recurring assignments with limited supervision and little review during the progress of the work. The supervisor explains new or unfamiliar procedures and provides information regarding price changes. Completed work is reviewed to ensure that instructions and established procedures have been followed. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and movement of the arms while stocking shelves and counters. Frequently lifts, carries, and moves boxes, crates, and other merchandise. Must be able to independently lift and carry objects weighing up to 45 pounds and lift or move objects weighing more than 45 pounds with assistance. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in well-lighted store areas generally maintained at a comfortable temperature; however, aisles may be crowded with customers. Employees may be exposed to varying temperatures when storing or retrieving merchandise. Work may also involve exposure to hot or cold weather, damp conditions, and drafts when working in storage or receiving areas. There is potential for minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, and similar incidents. Employees are required to wear issued protective equipment as directed.
