About the Position: As a geographer in this position you will apply your extensive knowledge and experience with geographic, cartographic, and land surveying practices and methodology for the creation and analysis of GIS databases.

Major duties

  • Serve as the District GIS expert, utilizing advanced computer technology, software, and evolving procedures to independently develop GIS products in coordination with engineers and scientists.
  • Plan and implement digital mapping projects (raster and vector) in remote sensing, photogrammetry, hydrography, topography, and land surveying.
  • Develop and analyze geo-referenced databases to interpret complex variables and evaluate the adequacy of external spatial data for District projects.
  • Represent the GIS, Mapping, and CADD section on project teams, analyzing civil works data (such as flood control and environmental restoration) while ensuring compliance with Corps-wide GIS standards.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, GIS provisions, and cost estimates for Architect-Engineer (A-E) contracts.
  • Lead technical evaluations of A-E contractors to verify their professional capabilities and equipment meet project requirements.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews on final contractor deliverables to ensure strict compliance with contract requirements.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the education requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below. Specialized Experience: Qualified applicants will describe in their resume at least one year of specialized experience with planning, coordinating and developing digital GIS (Geographic Information Systems) schemas, layers and databases, developing digital data and map products, planning and developing spatial databases. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
